Why solar powered lighting is perfect for towns and municipalities

My name is Ron Green. I’m the electrician
for the town of Sidney. Traditionally, the outdoor lighting within the municipality Is basically street lighting and little accent landscape lighting throughout the municipality. Originally it was all HID lighting. And in the past I would say two years I’ve converted all the streetlights to LED. Which has been an awesome awesome adventure. It’s been maintenance free now. People’s experience with solar is the landscape lighting within their own house. They have the solar things you can go buy at one of the big department stores. So I think the misconception is that solar is not going to last long enough To illuminate what we want. There was an opportunity to illuminate a pathway along the highway And our director at the time started looking into it. First Light came to the forefront. They gave us a presentation of their product. They didn’t so much sell us. The product sold itself. The fixture itself, as an electrician, was
well built, well constructed. So from there, we took the opportunity and we dove in headfirst. It was awesome because there was no hardwiring infrastructure that had to be done. The fixtures went in. I honestly can say, from the minute I
unpacked it, I was standing it up within 15 minutes. And it was operational. So, it was great. Now that we have illuminated I do remember some letters coming in Thanking the Municipality for putting lights out there. And when they realized they were solar The green technology And going without that Was very overwhelming welcome. We’ve had them installed, I believe, for five years. And within that five years, I have had zero maintenance for myself. I have a funny story about one of the
lights though. A car came off the highway. Took the pole, fixture, everything, right
off the base. As surprised as I was The pole was demolished but the head itself I literally unbolted from the pole and I put it back on a new pole And it’s still working today. Having that solar infrastructure in
today’s environment is We’re all environmentally conscious, I think that’s a huge issue for every municipality And when you can eliminate maintenance And the cost of infrastructure And then have a green technology I think it’s just its the forefront.
