SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Image, Texture, Matched Photo Import Options

SketchUp Tips and Tricks: Image, Texture, Matched Photo Import Options

When you import textures in Google SketchUp, you will have three options… … “Use As Image”, “Use As Texture”, and “Use As (new) Matched Photo”. The “Use As Image” option will import an image as if it were a billboard. The “Use As Texture” option will import the image as a repeating texture, like wrapping paper. If you select the “Matched Photo” option… … you will automatically be taken to the “Match Photo” interface. This is where you can align perspective lines… … to create a 3D model from the image.

Appreciate the input rarf, the goal is to be short and to the point. I encourage you to use the pause and play button liberally 🙂 Check out the others and let me know what you think.

Do you have the format set to "All Supported Image Types"? Is it a mac or pc? Your image can't be gif. Let me know if that helps.

No problem! Been in that situation myself. I wish Google would make SketchUp just autodetect the file like it does with Layout.

Hi! I'd like to ask about the other side of the object. How can I match 2,3,4… images to the same object? E.g. 4 side of a house or something like that. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could help me. When I import as an image, sometimes it puts a small border around the edge. For example an image (png) of a filled in circle that should be transparent outside the circle would have a faint square border around it. Even though this border isn't in the original image. Do you know what could be causing this? I could send you examples of what I'm talking about if that would help. Thanks!

Import image as texture or image. You can hide the edges. Right click explode the image, then shift + eraser click to hide each edge. We can show you all the tips and tricks in our 1-on-1 online training courses

Thanks for the reply. This border is not the edges from sketchup. When I turn off edges or erase them like you suggested, the border remains. Its like its part of the original image except its not there when I create the image.

Thanks for the vid. Would you know how to import a picture in order to put it as a background? I have a 3d model to which I wanna show perspectives, and in the background of the perspective I'd like to have the skyline of the city, for example. Thanks.

I like the sound of your mouse click by the way.

If you have grouped your model you need to right click edit the group, then paint each surface. If you paint outside the group, it will paint the whole group

Could you help me with creating some objects out of images? I don't fully understand this program yet, I am trying to put together an idea rather quickly and I need a graphic representation of it so I decided to use sketchup.
    Object 1- https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ5RTm-3COkWio8HPWGmdDWWw2Bhjj1HiQpEBzErcklALgoKC2i
(the inside of object 1. Doesnt need to be turned into an object just showing it for perspective purposes)- https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWjCFSGbjFkL28pd6NmFJ2TeFi-farkMoA1vvOsgwQoZvqMITumQ
    object 2 (https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQZDLUKHNU-O2SUzOBHRGdFD7031YlTNnfEWd3cPD-ZN-merRDh2g)
    Object 3 (https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQeo4uoSqkFlJQyM7D4xkBnMHOVmK0VYt_oNn-3P9-UvJg36_be)

I don't mind the clicking, you just saved my life. All these years I have struggled with 3ds Max. Now I found the most fun and easy 3d program ever <3 I just love how simple and good everything comes out of Sketch-up and how it's still really professional. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work <3
