Replacing Interior Doors

Replacing Interior Doors

alright I'm here at the little house today and we are going to try and get some work done we've got a few odds and ends to wrap up this house and one of them as being installing the doors the new doors upstairs for the bedrooms the issue is is that we pulled the old doors out and the new doors are too big they don't have any holes for hardware or hinges or any of that good stuff so they're just blanks we've got to cut out all the notches for the hinges the holes for the hardware and make sure that everything is the right in the right spot so it'll correspond with the old doors so all that being said I've also got a dentist appointment at 11 o'clock so I'm going to try and get started and then head on over there come back and finish up okay so I've got two interior doors to do these two right here and first things first I'm going to go ahead and measure the height it would have been good to keep these doors around as a reference but unfortunately they they win the dumpster so I'm going to measure to to figure out the height and make sure the width is correct as well and rather than doing both of them at the same time I think I'm just going to do one and then the other okay so I measured the doors and it looks like we've got a height of 76 inches now I'm going to take off eighth of an inch for the top and a quarter of an inch for the bottom so that's 3/8 of an inch from 76 and then I'm going to cut this door down to size okay so now that I've got this door cut down the issue is is that we get this big void down here at the bottom of the bottom of the door so what I'm going to do is I'm going to knock this this out and this is just going to just going to glue it back in place in there and that will just reconstitute the bottom of that door and stiffen everything up real nice so if you look closely at the door blank you'll notice that this side has this chamfer on both sides this is going to be our latch side because that's just going to allow it to swing in and out of the door jamb more freely whereas the other side does not the other stuff is going to be a 90 degree sharp 90 degree corner so that's the side that our hinges are going to go on okay so while I'm waiting for that door to dry the glue to dry on that one I'm going to go ahead and measure to cut the other one so that can be drying as well while we're installing it okay I'm going to go to the dentist office and get a cleaning if you're currently white shine up so Jamie is here painting trim so I'm gonna leave you with her and maybe she can get some work them over then okay so just has a door in here and it's Fitz but it's a pretty tight fit so now what I'm going to do is I'm going to run the hinge side I'm going to use my hand planer and I'm going to take about an eighth of an inch off the hinge side and that should give me enough room so that this door can swing freely [Applause] okay so I've got that side clean down and it fits much nicer what I've done here is I've shifted up from the bottom with this piece of picture piece of scrap wood that I had and you can see we've got nice thank you out through out there and I should kind of shift it just so we can hold it in place where I want it and this seems pretty good right now and now what I'm going to do is I'm going to mark the hinge locations corresponding with the existing hinge locations so I'm just going to go ahead and do this but all three shut up bird go back to reach in front don't throw stuff at it I mean seriously okay just start your video my gosh yeah but that bird keeps okay he came back and you think that bird were lying about great yet anyway so I went ahead and marked where my hinges are going to go now I've just got this this jig which is are going to be our router guide set it's three and a half inches I have a proper bit depth just lying it's lining it up with the marks that I have and I'm going to make sure that that the hinge is speaking the right way so the way that you know that is that the mark is on the backside where the hinge point should be whoa all that well you broke the plastic man now what do you do isn't all right I mean my goodness okay take you to trial and error I've learned that you're supposed to started with it a bit inside of the jig so let's see how this goes Oh there you go damn I will order for us presents okay so before we install the hinges we're actually going to I keep saying we but it's not really me to you Jamie is going to paint the doors we're going to go ahead and paint both of the doors and I will make sure that the other one is the correct width so she can move right on to this to the next for paint so we'll get the paint dry and then put in jizan [Applause] all right so the paint is dry on the doors I went ahead and installed those hinges to the door and now I'm just going to set that door up and attach it to the the frame the door frame okay so one thing that I'm noticing right away is that the joints look okay everything looks fairly square but doors fine when it's closed however when it opens make some contact with the ground so I'm going to trim down the bottom of that door a little bit more to make it work okay so I've got my door hung my hinges are installed to the frame and I swapped out my strength plate with the noose strike plate so I've got these interior handles from slag the problem is there's no holes in the door so the issue comes where how do we locate those holes according to the existing strike plate and the existing latch hole so this this jig from Ryobi is actually pretty cool I use it on the other door already just to test it out and figure it all out and what you do is you Clinton's here on the door and then use this fine that find that straight pretty cool so now I pull that out little excited yeah I'm gonna pull this out and now I'm going to attach this with the other latch screws alright this jig also comes with a hole saw that is the correct size for your door handle I'm going to drill through until just the bit comes out not the whole saw then I'm going to flip over to the other side and finish the hole off okay one minute now we stopped out that hole so for a minute this and drill the hole for the latch you get a nice clean hole no actually sits recessed into the door like that so now we have to carve out this little hole right here and Rio we also offers this little very cool little door latch kit it's a very clever design I like it so essentially this please sits on the further door that hole that little thing goes in the hole and then that lines everything up can you just take a hammer so that cuts our little line and then there's this other tool on this side right here it gives you the right depth you just stick it in there oh that is so cool Oh oh my gosh I want one you wanna try it that's so genius it is very other I didn't know if it was actually existed that's really cool I mean how else are you going to do it again oh look a little router here we go hey you're good almost working oh you can now you get that off sucks I don't break it so well I mean I want to get a chance to use okay so now we just take a little – hey bud what you doing okay so I'll give it a test run perfect the other one was perfect – and I did that and I am I'm quite impressed with these tools because I have never I've never done this before this is my first time drilling holes in a door for the handles replacing an interior door so getting the alignment is key and use these tools they come out would certainly be making you can't find a screwdriver and now you have the back game because look at that mess you made on the brand new carpet look terrible so we put the kids to bed however this little one excused escaped to come back down and hang out with well she took a nap in the afternoon and just we she woke up from her nap at like 5:00 so I didn't really expect her to go to bed yeah so we got a good bit of work tonight done today I was pretty happy with out how the day turned out but tomorrow we've got a few things in mind that we want to get done I'm going to go to the hardware store and get some materials and yeah but overall that is about it for today you want to say good night Maddie good night and goodbye and we'll see you guys tomorrow thanks for tuning in
