Remodeling A Bathroom Series Part 12 [Miscellaneous details and tips]

hey guys we're back in the bathroom and a lot of this bring you up to speed or at everything I should say everything the bathroom is 99% tiled we got the full 5/8 subway tiles we have our glass mosaic accent strip we used marvel bulldozing to kind of differentiate and separate this accent strip from the wall tile we use the 2 by 2 tile on the floor and as you know we use the style stone all the way around around the top we're going to use it on the countertop we use a half wall we did verticals so we can mount our glass our vascular enclosures on this we also get our threshold and the other side of our threshold the floor has been installed we used 18 by 18 tile big ceramic tile on that it's been installed and waiting to be grounded a couple of things I want to talk to you about tips let's just call it tips for ease of use and efficiency of using your bathroom but also remodeling the bathroom it's important and I've stressed this in almost every video and article I've written on this series it's important to plan and anticipate issues we had a couple of small issues that have set us back it's a reality in a remodeling project when we were crowding we weren't sure whether to drop the accent strip with the white drop from the subway or to use a beige colored grout which is what the floor is getting the decision maker was on business trip unable to reach her self will not answer we didn't know what to do we had to stop the the tile guy was done for the day the subcontractor he left so he has to come back to do that another big deal he's gonna finish that he gets to drop the floor and he's going to also apply a sealer to these tiles I yours truly mismeasured the Silas stone here on the edge of the wall I forgot to add four half-inch Duroc and like a little bit of a reveal as a result we get to reorder the Silestone week and a half later it shows up but as a result of that we couldn't fish before so if you remember we installed lonely heat when we were just radiant heat on the floor we tied a little with that but we couldn't finish the tile around the shower or the tile on this wall here because the side stone wasn't installed so that's a setback that sets the tile contract about that sets almost everybody back so we had to work around that we found workarounds and we just kept over the tile around the top we want you to use the accent tile it's a 12 X 12 sheet we're going to use the full 12 inches all the way around the tub it's going to be a really nice accent it's going to make the top pop we use the American Standard eco silent tub and the Portsmouth collection and shower and then the tub and sinks it's really gonna look sweet when it's nice when it's done it's a real nice detail real nice fixtures and that's that as far as bringing you up to speed as far as tips tips and techniques to make this bathroom more efficient easy to use when you're doing the installation for the tile make sure you have a great tile saw a professional grade not you know score and snap we use the wash TC 10 its bosses first tile saw that came out it's a really nice saw it's got a couple of little tweaks that I like to see done and I'm going to be doing a review on that later and that's for another video the we're talking about having the decision maker and president and also as far as the radiant floor heat you want to have a smart thermostat not just a thermostat a programmable one a smart one one will turn on and off when you use the bathroom not when you're at work or on vacation it should work with your schedule so think about that while we're on the subject of thirst guys it's talking about switches and timers this is a timer switch for the shower light and fan if you press it it turns out in front of 30 minutes it will stay on if it says this humidity Panasonic makes these and it goes with the Panasonic fan and it senses humidity in the air and will stay on until the room was clear you press it again a lot the 30 minutes and turn off really nice we use the levitron renew switches and the thing I like about the Leviton renew switches is you can change the color of the switch and the light plate to the decor of your own they have a multitude of colors we chose white it's boring for now may change that but you can change it to match your colors years ago we used to have to sand the light flake down and paint it but you could not paint the switch because it would not right away so you would have a nice color painted wall plate with the law matching and your toggle switch would be brown while you're driving or whatever so something like that is important I want to talk about motion sensors occupancy sensors and timer switches we were going to do the kids one of the complaints in this bathroom while the kids were always leaving the lights on so we're going to do an occupancy sensor but we decided we're going to use it in the hallway instead the optic sensor is great because it senses people committed to the hallway if you can set the amount of time the light stays on we chose 30 seconds enough to get through the hallway the light will stay on if you're in the hallway but if you pass through it'll stay up to thirty seconds and then turn off the timer switch we didn't use on this project but I've used up my many projects Leviton makes an astronomical clock timer switch where you can set it to the latitude and longitude of your area project and the lights will turn on at dusk and off at sunrise and I said on my particular situation in my house I have them turn on it at sundown and they turn on that Vigna me I set the time on woman to turn off really nice detail they also stand for Leviton offers an array of different types of type of outlets and this stuff we use them all throughout this bathroom at work great another tip I wanna share with you is keep a file folder of every instruction manual and literature you have in this project to include photographs of where the pipes and systems are buried in the walls it's useful on future renovations it's also useful something breaks if your faucet leaks is it under warranty can you get wash it or a putter cartridge it's really important and the label of those instructions for instance we just talked about the timer switches which time switches which or will you remember six months or a year from now how to reprogram that timer so that's an interesting stuff to think about and to keep in a file or somewhere for yourself and also for a future owners another good tip is to keep extra tile I like to keep you know maybe a sheet or two of the accent tile I have the box of the subway tile as well as the floor and the shower tile for repairs it is a leak or if is a damaged or cracked tile something drops and breaks it it's good to have the reason is tile changes the locks change in every lock it has variations in color so to ensure that you have the right matching color to the title you install in your bathroom save some of the tiles you use and you don't have to worry about it and then lastly one final tip that I didn't do this time because I forgot plus if your bathroom toilet is installed between a wall and a wall or a wall and Fanny install the base board before the toilet goes on otherwise you've got to try to get a piece of wood in there tight or you have to splice two pieces together to make it fit a lot of times I'll use PVC board with a base cap on top of it you have a toilet for obvious reasons it can be a wet area the toilet alone the flow and if you've got little boys sometimes there's overspray so you you know by using PVC you're not going to have the problems you would with wood so those are the tips I want to share with you on the next video we're going to show you we're going to talk about the Ganymede counter being an account cabinet that we bought as well as the talk about the style stone countertop in the American Standard an undermount sinks and show you how we install those and maybe a few little tips on some time-saving tips and involved as well so we're almost there folks we'll see you the next video take care

Great points. I do like the PVC around the toilet. We are working on a new build house and people seem to never understand the order of trades and what each trade needs to do before they can do other things. They want us to start trim and building closets before doors come in.

Agreed. I appreciate you raising that point. Appropriate safety gear should always be worn. Unfortunately this sub-contractor didn't see "eye to eye" with me on this topic.
