Our Small House Tour | Downsizing to 1000 Square Feet

hey don't mind the dogs hey guys it's Kat I thought I would give you a little home tour some of you who have asked me how the downsizing went went well obviously we're still here but how did we do it how did we manage did we have any issues or problems all of those things and I think Blaine and I are gonna try and answer those questions in a couple of videos so if you are thinking about downsizing this is a great video I hope it's gonna be a great video but just to show you I guess how we managed how we managed from going from twenty-six hundred some-odd square feet to just a little over a thousand I really wanted to go a little smaller than what we have now but when I walked into this house I knew this was it I knew this was perfect for us it was not too small it was not too big it was just right so let me show you around the house all right so let's start with the front door because I don't know that just seems to make sense to me but when you walk into our front door this is what you see one great big well not great big but one nice open space there's a couple things that I absolutely loved when I walked into this house first thing was the light even without the lights on it just looks light and bright and airy and our other house even though it had almost 30 windows in it it just seemed to be dark and I don't know it just made this makes a huge difference some of the windows that we have are floor-to-ceiling which I think to the brightness but anyway the the thing that I fell in love with is when I walked into this house you see the sliding glass door goes right out to the porch which goes right out to the back yard and it just makes let me back up here so I can show you it makes the space look bigger than it actually is and I absolutely love that other thing that I love about this house is better than it it is absolutely adorable and cute and I love it is this space right here this was built in a lot of the houses that we looked at did not have that and I'm so happy we have it because it meant that I was able to get rid of a couple big pieces of furniture the TV cabinet for one some office equipment I've got our printer under here our router under here I've got some of our paper supplies and stuff in there I've got our DVDs family photos CDs all in there I got rid of a bookshelf and all of it is in here now and it's nice and neat and tidy and I don't have a big heavy bookcase or desk to have to worry about the other thing that we got rid of was our couch and loveseat now I knew what this space a couch would overtake this whole area and I needed to consolidate an office in here so I kept this smaller desk out of the other desks that we had and had to put everything and make it fit into here that was not easy I'll tell you that but we did it and we knew we had to so when you downsize it kind of forces you to really think about the things that you have and do you really need it do I need to keep this do I need to store this do I need to have this and if the answer is no then you get rid of it I mean really you don't have a lot of choice in the matter and it really forces you to really think about what it is that you want to have what do you want to keep that kind of stuff so back to the couch um I didn't want a couch in here because I knew it would it would take / so I I needed something that would fit in here and I thought well I could get a loveseat lovesy would have been way too small it would been fine for Blaine and myself but when you have company over you really need to have additional seating and this will fit I mean I could fit four people in here but it'll fit three people very comfortably I do plan on getting another chair kind of a couch kind of chair in here but I'm not really sure yet I'm I'm wanting to live with the space before I add another piece of furniture in here back to the couch though this is a sleeper sofa we lucked out on this so it's a double and it's really nice to have when we have when we'll need extra beds for company to sleep over something that you want to think about is with your furniture the pieces that you keep can it store things and that kind it definitely helps so in this piece of furniture I have games and blankets and stuff like that in there it's a really big piece and then I've got this over here has storage in it as well I've shared this a little bit before but it's really nice to have that additional storage spaces use up the spaces so this couch table which I actually had up in the hallway in our upstairs has plenty of storage underneath so I use baskets we've got some business stuff in there but you know use baskets decorative baskets so it looks nice and it doesn't look like tubs of something because I don't like that so I've got a basket here I have a basket under here and I've got another one on top of the refrigerator and they look nice they go with the decor but they also are practical they have a function my battery keeps going on all right the the other pieces of furniture that we chose to keep is this side table or buffet table it's his amazing storage in it so I use that to put in China silverware I also have tablecloths and things like that that kind of go with what it's used for in here for right now I'm also I'm using it to store my cookbooks I had a lot of cookbooks and I downsized to what you see right there I think there's two more actually um that I have in the cabinet right in there but than that that's it and I didn't want to put it on the counter I don't like a lot of things on the counter and I know I've got a lot of things on the counter but you know I wanted my the stuff that we use everyday but I also wanted it to look pretty as well you know so there is that now this piece came with the house I love this because it has little shelves on the side it's got drawers I actually keep our utensils in here I've got our ninja and stuff under there it also has additional shelves on this side what I love about this is that when you open it up great video cat nice but anyway this opens up and you have additional seating if you want or storage you know if you're having a party or something you can put your stuff on there for the Aged of this house there's a lot of cabinets I was very surprised very happy with the amount of storage that we had we looked at some houses that it was going to be interesting where we're gonna store stuff this is an amazing cabinet over here I've got the biggest kind of pieces that I don't use other than that every day you know things that you've got ABC storage you know stuff that you use every day you want to have it out front Center you know like your coffee maker your toaster that kind of stuff and then see items UB items would be things that you use once a week or so and then the see items I consider our seasonal stuff that you just you want kind of away and not where you have to go through it to get to the stuff that use everyday did that just make sense I hope it did anyway this is our kitchen I was telling about the basket that I used to store my aprons and dish cloths and stuff like that so yep this is the kitchen and it's just I don't have the lights on in here other than my little things over here but look how light it is in here I love it absolutely love it we take you down the hallway she loved this dog's bed so they have like taken over this space oh my gosh I also have gotten a doggie gate because it's new carpet and I'd like to keep it that way all right this first bedroom is what I call stairs room it's also what we have used as I guess bedroom and these are the pieces that she wanted to keep so we've got this bookshelf and this dresser in here this was her grandmother's this is also was her grandmother's as well and then she's got a nice-sized closet not too bad and go through come around and over here we have the bathroom hi it's a nice-sized bathroom I mean it's it's perfect and so easy to clean and love that and then here we have this is just our water heater and I also store our broom and I've got some baskets that one of them has like our scarves and mitten and then another one we use when we go on a picnic or when we go to the beach so who's in here gosh that battery okay so this other bedroom and I don't have any lights on in here this is my son's bedroom he's got the futon in here which is again great so if we have company we can we have plenty of space I'm using his desk thanks David to work out of and I'll show you he's got a really nice closet which is kind of packed at the moment you turn the light on I'm this is all our clothes part of Blaine my my clothes baby bins are right there I've got some things I still need to go through but David's closet seems to be the biggest right now so it stores a lot it stores are vacuum cleaner and the iron in the ironing board he's got a nice-sized room he really does so that's this one and then we come to some additional storage I have kind of just have stuff thrown in here and there are some things in here that I will be getting rid of I need to let go of basically and then just so that I can use this for storage in here but really nice it's really deep and then down in here we converted this door for the kitty box I have to put this rubber band on because if the dogs get in here and they like to get into the cab box it's just not a good thing but I've got additional storage here I've been going through this cabinet so there's things that I've gotten rid of this was kind of packed but I'm reading this but that's where we've got the kitty litter box it's perfect because that's linoleum and it doesn't get on the carpet just really nice and she likes it cuz it's private for her and then into our bedroom the battery keeps going out I'm sorry guys alright so we kept our mattress and box spring and when we moved here we did not have a frame and I did not have a headboard because our our bed that we had before the headboard that we had before it would it would it's massive so we sold that to the lady buying our house and we got the frame and this headboard which I absolutely loved at a restore the brand new so um loved that and then we got this new dresser and it's considerably smaller than what we had before but you know when you're downsizing you have to really think about what it is that you want to keep what's important and the closet was a big deal for me because I went from 18 we had a walk-in closet so I'm gonna say was about 14 15 16 feet I had maybe 8 feet on my side no yeah 8 and 8 that would be 16 hello do your math so that was that was a challenge for sure I'm slowly taking some of the stuff out of Davis closet and putting it into here because we're getting a little cooler weather so I'm slowly doing that as and as I'm doing that I'm getting rid of a lot of stuff so um yeah this was a challenge for sure and use all the space that you can so you get you know over the door hangers and shoe racks and stuff like that I've got this barrister bookcase that was Blaine's mom's and then here's our bathroom and I love the sizes bathroom it's it's just it's the perfect size it's not too big again it's like doable compared to what we had before it's got great storage in here so I've been cleaning some stuff out we do have some important papers and stuff like that that we keep back in here because we have the space to do that got towels and some other things so there's that and then we just have a shower stall want to take a bath I'll just go and use it in the other room just this this is that anyway I was just sharing like you know utilizing the space the best that you can using nooks and crannies and stuff like that yeah you're creative you get creative that's the word I was trying to suss it to right and show more a laser printer was yeah and unfortunately work because a lot of the houses that we looked at that were this size didn't have the storage but you know just like the differences from our closet but you haven't noticed any of the clothes of yours that I got rid of yeah hmm I'm working on that I'm working on it I'm trying really hard are you doing great yeah that's a significantly smaller closet it is I mean it's easy to clean it's easy to maintain we were if you watch the other video we shared the whole lawn how long it took blades to do the lawn at the other house were huge so it's like four times less time yeah a week it's actually kind of fun to do yes so he went from three hours to less than an hour which gives more time to do other things outside landscaping inside pleasure relaxation and that's that's one of the things I don't say it's the whole thing but it's one of the things that you do when you downsize you're downsizing with a purpose to enjoy life and free up time and 3x or tonight you'd like to do images you're not spending it doing the lawn and I'm not spending it cleaning a great big huge house alright guys that is the tour of our cute little house I think it's absolutely precious I love it good because this is where we're at but we thought we would share that with you guys because I know that there is there are a lot of people who are looking to do the same thing and I think it's it can be scary it can be scary to make that decision what do I do am I going to be able to cope am I going to like it and I'll definitely tell you we love it absolutely love it so it's it for me guys thanks for hanging out with me I will definitely see you in the next video

I have a 5000 sq ft house with a detached guest house. Could you cover how to handle a spouse that doesn’t want to downsize

I lived in a 1080 sq ft home for years … I thought it sucked. The kitchen was small and if I had more than 4 occupants living with in the house it was crowd (Which didn't help my claustrophobia). While I'm not in favor of having a mansion I do like having more space to move around in. To each their own I guess.

Where is your laundry room? Also, you don't have a coat closet? Where do you keep coats, raincoats, umbrellas, etc.?
If you could re-locate your water heater, that could give you a closet, don't you think? With that little sofa, how do you stretch out and watch tv?

A great video. I have wanted to downsize for some years now, but seems every time we are freed up from family obligations, someone else needs a room for awhile. I totally agree with time. It is one of the essences of freedom to do other things, such as as travel, etc. I also love the traditional furnishings. Seems every video I watch, everyone has the contemporary look. I love the warmer, darker and richer colors of furnishings. Lovely new home. I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

Actually having one large statement piece of furniture makes a space look larger than several small pieces

What a beautiful house. The size is great (easier to clean) and it has a lot of character.

We did the same thing. We downsized. We in turn bought a home that needed repair. So we could make it what we wanted. What were the exact steps you went through to start a YouTube channel? I'm 56 years old and wanting to share our life experiences here in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park area. Other than a cellphone. What cheap camera and tripod do you recommend? I want to film facing towards me then rotating the screen and then turning the screen back towards me. A cellphone you can't do that. Without making multiple videos. That's not a good thing to do. I want to be economical about when starting my own YouTube channel. Can you please help??? All the videos on YouTube confuse me and I just can't understand them. I haven't found a Youtuber yet than help me.

This is about the size of my small terrace house in England that I downsized to about 2 years ago, my bedrooms are bigger but similar sort of sizing. I didn’t leave a massive house compared to some American homes, but it was a lot bigger than what I have now, and I do miss some of the space, especially my large dining room, whereas now I have a kitchen diner. I do like your furniture and your eclectic taste of putting bits together, it’s very sweet and quirky which is lovely.

We are a family of 5 living in a 1010sf home. We only had one older child when we bought it so a small 3 bedroom w 1 car garage was okay, though we came from a very large size home prevously. It was a tight fit then but now we are busting at the seams! The difference in our houses is that you have amazing storage spaces. Our 3rd bedroom was originally a dinning room so there is no closet in there. We have 1 extremely small bathroom and a 1/2 bath and storage would make the world of difference for us.

I think storage and a functional and pleasing floor plan helps immensely when living in a small house. My house is 900 Sq ft but has poorly designed storage and a very cut up floor space which makes it feel tight. You're home is beautifully and smartly done!
