New House Tour

New House Tour

– You guys want a house tour? Come on in! I almost feel like it’s
too late to do a house tour because I’ve been talking
about the renovations on my home for a couple months now. I will say the most impactful thing we did on the house was the cheapest. (upbeat music) Welcome to my house! I almost feel like it’s
too late to do a house tour because I’ve been talking
about the renovations on my home for a couple months now, and I keep putting off doing a house tour because the house keeps
not getting finished. There are a few things
that need to be done still, like putting deadbolts on the door, and on our porch we have this light waiting to be replaced
with a pendant light which will hang down and be beautiful. However, the majority of
the house is finally done. And I am ready to show you. Okay so I have to start
with actually my favorite, which is the front door. The front porch even. The front porch is gorgeous. It is so fun to sit out here with Kevin. I actually picked out the
door color in five minutes. I didn’t realize the door
was being painted that day, and Brandon who has been doing all of the changes on our house, he’s amazing, he called and he said, hey do you have the door color picked out? And I said, uh, no but I can. Give me a few minutes. And I was picking up the kids from school. I stopped by the paint store, I literally had five minutes to pick, and I picked this and I don’t even know what color it is. I might be able to figure it out. Okay, so it’s a Sherwin Williams color. I’m not sure how to pronounce that. Niebla Azul. But it is a beautiful
color that’s not blue, and it’s not green, but
it’s kind of a perfect mix. I absolutely love the garage door. The X’s on the bottom with the hardware, it is so cute, and I
absolutely cannot wait to put some, get some family
photos in front of it, and just a really fun, pretty backdrop. I also love the door handle. Since I don’t like a lot of decorations, I decided that all of the things that you have to have in a house, I would just make decorative. And that is the decoration. So the door handle all
by itself in the house is the decoration. The glass that we chose on this, and I say “we” but what
I really meant is me, doesn’t allow you to see out or to see in, but the sun can still
come in and light the room which is great for photos
in front of this door. We like to take a lot of
photos in our entryway. And it’s kind of a striation pattern. The one that he said most people choose is the seeded glass,
and so because of that, I didn’t get the seeded glass. I got what most people don’t use. All of the door handles have
this square rubbed iron bronze which is really fun
and I think it warms up because we have so much white in the house that I think that the
wrought iron warms it up. And we did this beautiful molding, and we brought the molding
into our music room. So when you walk in our house, you walk into this pretty rug and this is- the rug is the only decoration
in the entire house, and then you walk here
into the music room, and the music room has two couches and our music instruments. That’s it. And I love it. I have not gotten sick
at all of looking at it. The walls were really fun. And it’s faux, so it’s really, this is just the wall that’s original, and we just painted the wall white instead of putting board there. We had it priced to have board and batten, and then just the boards
with the faux batten which is just the wall. And it was really, really
expensive to do the boards, and we thought, no, that’s all right, just paint the walls white. On camera, you cannot tell a difference. And then, of course, we
went with the gray on top. I am so slow to come to trends. I am so slow. When everybody started
painting their house gray I said I am not doing gray. I’m gonna do yellow because
nobody’s doing yellow. And eventually I came to gray, and now I think gray is leaving, and everyone’s doing all white so that’s all right. But I do not like pillows,
I do not like blankets. I do let the kids have those. It’s fun to dress up
the house for Christmas. I do have decorations for Christmas. (upbeat music) I love looking out our
window in the music room. It is so pretty to see
the flowers peeping up over the top of the window box. We got this idea from Nantucket
when we were in Nantucket. Every house had a window box with flowers, and it just added so much charm. Window boxes with flowers
is so inexpensive to do. It’s really, really affordable, and it just adds so much charm. It looks so cute. And then these trees, as they get bigger, and this tree right here in the corner, as they get bigger, it’s
just gonna be so fun to have that fill our window. Isn’t that a beautiful view? I just love it. We bought our house right
when we got out of college. Kevin graduated with his phD in 2011. So right as the housing
prices had hit the very bottom of the market and were
starting to come back, which is the perfect time to buy a house. So the timing, of course, we didn’t know that we were timing it. We just accidentally timed
the purchase of the home at the perfect time. And everything in here was original. It was a lot of yellow, and then of course I
painted the walls yellow. I loved it at the time, and I’m so glad we got to do the facelift, but the banister right
here was all original oak, and we had it replaced with
the wrought iron and the white. The only thing that we did
different in the kitchen were the white boards,
and oh, the chandelier. I forgot to tell you guys
about the chandelier! Oh my gosh, how did I forget? Okay, right back into the entryway. Okay check out this chandelier. It is my favorite piece of jewelry. In the kitchen, we did the boards all the way up to the ceiling. Originally we were only gonna go up three quarters of the way to match where we ended with the entry. But then I couldn’t figure out how I was gonna hang up my
calendar and my whiteboard which we use all the time. I don’t know how big families
do it without a calendar or a whiteboard so we went
all the way to the top so I could hang those. And we went all the way to the top, and of course we did the
kitchen two years ago, and I have loved having
all white appliances. Love, love, love, love
the white appliances. I would not go back. I think they’re super easy to keep clean. I don’t think fingerprints
show up on white as much as they do the stainless steel. We have white on the left
and Brandon was so great to add white on the right. I originally only said the left, and he just has a really
great eye to tell me nope, we’re gonna do
it on the right as well because that’s what looks good. So thank you Brandon. And as you walk downstairs,
this wall used to be just generic and we put these, I
don’t know what you call it, but more boards in a square
pattern all along the wall. And I absolutely love it. I think it brightens up this room. So this room is the library. And this is where we
come and sit and read. It’s where we do a lot of study. In the winter we turn on
the fireplace right there. This vase Kevin got me when
he was in the Netherlands, and it is so pretty. I wanna get something pretty
to come out the top there. Some flowers or something. We also chose just to
leave the window naked. We didn’t put any curtains
on them or anything, and I love it. The more simple, the better. I just love having the
walls simple and plain. And so here is our basement. I really love how painting the walls brightened everything up. We decided to do white
down here instead of gray. And I added the white marker board. We did these Easter egg doors. I call them in Easter egg blue, but I think it adds just a pop of energy without making the room feel too small. We got rid of the toys. We packed them up and put them away and it made it a classroom. And the kids love the classroom. They literally spend hours in here pretending to be teacher,
doing arts and crafts, and cutting, and stapling, and taping. Do you wanna know what
the best toy to get a kid? Tape, staples, scissors, and
an unlimited supply of paper. All of my rugs, just in
case some of you are asking, are from Overstock. Overstock, you should sponsor me sometime. And we have the same couch in here that we’ve had for a few years, and it has not held up very well. We’re starting to get little holes in it. It has not been the nicest couch. And now I want to show
you my laundry room. I keep thinking I’ll film this video when my laundry room is perfect. And I’m realizing that may not be for another 12 years. So you will see the laundry room in use. So when you walk in, we have
a large cabinet right here because we still have touch-ups and stuff, we have paint here. But normally that’s clear. And then we have some cupboards above. My next year’s project is going to be to rip out these cabinets
and do custom built cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling, and then I can get rid of the baskets. I don’t like baskets on top
because it gathers dust. And I can fit so much more
if it were a closed cabinet, and if it went all the way to the wall. I might even add some
backsplash next year. I think that would be
pretty if I added that. So what we did add this year,
you guys, this is genius. And this is, of course,
in use, keep in mind. But this folding table we added. And it was my idea to do this. I don’t know if it’s
ever been done before, but my contractor said
he’s never heard of it, and I kind of gave him
an idea of what I wanted, and he figured it out, and he did it. He built a little cubby where
my ironing board can slip in because ironing boards are
so hard to find a place for, and they’re not beautiful
hanging on the wall, so this tucks in really nicely. I also had all of my laundry baskets purchased before the cabinet was made so he could measure to make sure that the cabinet height allowed for
everybody’s laundry baskets to be underneath. And it’s just been absolutely amazing. So my dad also built these shelves. My mom and dad did it together. And they have been super useful. And yeah, that’s my basket
of ironing right there. Can you tell those are
things that need ironed. My bedroom. Has not changed at all since it was done almost two years ago. Monica Mangin came and did
it with East Coast Creative. I did buy new sheets. The sheets used to be black and white and all black and white ones were sold, so I got gray. It’s a flannel and I get
flannel sheets every October. I treat myself to some new ones. I got a wool blanket. I love real wool in the winter. You would think, oh you
know, $100 is way overpriced for a blanket. I would never spend $100 on a blanket. I would if it had real wool,
if it was made of real wool because it’s so warm. I’ve switched out some of the pillows because pillows get flat over time. This pillow, I think I got at Target, and this long, heavy-duty
pillow in the middle came from Anthropology. I think these came from Walmart. I did change up the
decoration on my dresser. I don’t like knick-knacks but I thought these were kinda cute
and simple and fresh. I got that idea from the Leroys. Shannon Leroy and I have very
similar decorating tastes. I feel like, the few times
I’ve been in her home, everything is very plain. She doesn’t have a lot
hanging on the walls. I don’t think I have a single picture hanging up on my walls. Oh, no, I do. Right there. The hummingbirds. All right, well I am gonna go
pick up the kids from school. I’m glad that I did this house tour. I hope you guys like it. I will say, the most impactful
thing we did on the house was the cheapest. So if you’re looking to do something interesting with your
house, but you only have a budget of a couple hundred dollars, I would suggest painting the trim on the outside of your house. We painted around the
windows and it was like putting lipstick on the house. It was so fun, so cheap,
and had the most impact. Since my comments are turned off, come on over to my Instagram @8passengers, and let me know what your favorite change in our house has been. What did you notice the most on camera? I know what I notice, being in the house, and that might be different
showing up on camera. So let me know what
your favorite change is.
