Meet Michael DiPilato: Visual Guidance

The work that we’re doing is vitally important to improve the safety on the airport surface. My name is Mike DiPilato and I conduct research to improve the visual guidance system on an airport. What can we do to improve it so pilots and ground vehicle operators can safely maneuver on an airport surface? In our visual guidance program, we research to improve
our airfield markings, signage, and lighting. This is the current installed paint marking. So what we’re trying to do is look at the
performance and durability of the paint. We’re looking at other new types of paint
markings with different textures to see which is most common, and to the pilot. It’s pretty cool to be part of a team that
helps to develop those performance specifications, which airports can later adopt. I constantly look out of the window and say,
“I made an impact to make this airport safe.” I am very passionate about my work. I love coming to work every day. I feel as though I’m a
modern day aviation pioneer.
