Marvel Fitting – Repair a Kitchen Stub Out – Waste Connection

all right one of question we get the hardware store a lot is a customer will come in and they're changing their under sink pipes to let's say a kitchen where we are here and they have an old stub out an old metal pipe that in this case you can see it's cracked and rusted and so it doesn't have a smooth surface here and if you're trying to put on a regular slip nut onto these threads there's a good chance that because it's a little broken and rusted here it may leak so a good solution is this is called a Marvell fitting or just a waste connection and this fitting has longer threads and so what we're able to do is we'll we'll fill the male threads with pipe dope or pipe thread compound and we'll screw this down and this will allow us to go deeper onto the pipe and cover that rusted area and then it also gives a nice smooth tight fit for the wall tube that's going in here and now once we connect this and tighten this down we're going to have a very tight waterproof seal and it's going to solve the problem of having an old pipe that's a little rusted on the ends of the threats and a lot of times customers are reluctant to remove the old fittings because they might then have a problem with the connections further in the wall so this is a great solution if you're just changing the under sink pipes

    Hi,
You can pick up a rubber coupling at your hardware store. You can then connect a short piece of pvc pipe to a plastic waste connection. I've used this connection in many old homes with rusted out threads on the stub out. Let me know if that helps.

what if you have a metal pipe with no thread? How do you connect the p-trap without making a thread? Is there anything that would work with compression? Thank you!

    Hi,
You are right, there will be some reaction with dissimilar metals. I called Plumb Pak, one of the manufacturers of these fittings and they said they have no data on how long this type of connection would last.

I have used this type of fitting for years when I had rental properties with no call backs. So it must last for decades. If you are concerned, you can purchase an all plastic waste connection. Great question, thanks.
