we are producing this video in collaboration with State Farm Insurance hey guys welcome back to broken design today I'm going to change it up a little bit and I'm going to walk you through what I'm getting ready to do it's a Saturday and I'm gonna get fire safe and fire ready you wanna know why because I live in Southern California and we are in the middle of a drought and it's fire season alright so I'm gonna check my smoke detector I've never done it before there's a couple things that I should mention they're kind of obvious but a smoke detector is really important to have in your home always have extra batteries on hand as well oh wow look the takes 9-volt batteries these aren't ones I usually have around secondly carbon monoxide make sure you have batteries for that also number two fire extinguishers if it works now I don't know if you have one I've had one for years because the way I cook my family made me get one but it's always a good thing to have on hand in case of an emergency I'm a lover of candles I think they look amazing in a home and as a designer I use them all the time if it's in an area that you spend a lot of time in or you know your living room like right here I'm sitting here I'm not walking away from it or if it's at my dining room table awesome but a bedroom and a bathroom those are two places where I no longer use real burning candles I use battery operated candles let me just tell you they make some amazing ones now number four is really important it's getting a fireproof box that you can keep your important documents in number five this is really important make a list of things that you need to grab in the event that you have an evacuation this is something that I would have really appreciated when we evacuated ten years ago Scott grabbed all my clothes except he only got tops I had no bottom I remembered my box of Splenda but I forgot my children's pictures be sure to grab your medication contacts if you wear them now for me glasses I need about a hundred pair I think I'll be fine with just 50 all right I'm ready to evacuate on my list I've also got the phone and charger is what if you run out of battery we got what's up and credit cards and cash either we keep the cash go get it and also include your fireproof box that's why you made that box and it's going to be so easy just to grab I can tell you what's on my list baby books memorabilia things that are valuable that you don't think at the time to take make sure that if you have any videos of the family gotta take the family videos for my memorabilia I'm taking my wedding dress my wedding book I'd even take my wedding cake for I still haven't thanked God that thing would be disgusting my eyes and don't forget your hard drives on your computer number six is one of my favorite things and it's what I really plan to do today I've been wanting to do it for a long time and that is to take a video of my home not just the obvious things like here's you know a hack I could go to youtube right and see all the pictures of my own but once the inside of my cabinets and my closets and my drawers those things have a lot of value and I am NOT likely to remember what they are later so I feel prepared how about you get your list going and why don't you spend some time filming and getting your place together so that you are fire ready and fire safe see you guys next time bye
