Humber sweeps Design Exchange competition

Sonja Skwarka: Tonight is the awards ceremony for the Connect competition and my team won first place for the product
design category. What we did was re-invented the misting station. Every part of our product was accessible to everybody. Karen White: The teams are comprised of about four-five students and they work together to address the problem of the brief which was
to create a project that was all about accessible design, and so the students researched
the topic and came up with brand-new ideas of how to create products and experiences for people of all abilities. Alfred Spencer: Through their education they are actually learning to think outside that box. So you take your education at
a school like Humber and say: it’s not the traditional way of doing things. We
want you to stretch your mind in a way that looks at world just a little bit different. Didar Kurshun: The great thing about Humber is we can have one-on-one meetings with our professors and they are always available
for us outside the classrooms too and even if it’s not school time they are always
there willing to help us in anyway. Sonja Skwarka: We have a new design building now,
which helps a lot too because it is open concept and everybody is able to
connect on a different level and you can get help from basically anybody because it’s so open. Karen White: And increasingly design consultants are looking at problems and how they can be solved so they are
bringing in industrial designers, graphic designers interior designers and working together to create these new ideas and respond to these opportunities. And our students are really adept and flexible and they can really move into those opportunities. Sonja Swarka: So for my internship I am at
Mesa Design Studio, and it’s a smaller firm based in Mississauga. So we use alot of
3D programs like Stetch-Up, Podium and 3D Max in order to make the spaces come alive. Richard Reininger: It’s more than just a career it’s like a lifestyle choice, you know, it’s a true passion. So you come
to this big interior government design competition and Humber sweeps you know what I mean,
so the results speak for themselves.
