How to use asphalt cold patch to repair blacktop, fix cracks, holes

hi I'm Blair Gilbert here from mr. Hardware calm and Gilbert's pro hard were in st. Clair Shores mission it we're outdoors today we're shooting a quick video on how to use ashphalt catch and black top patch also known as cold patch as you can see here this particular section of road where it goes from wind specie of blacktop to another there's quite a void if this isn't addressed this blacktop is going to keep breaking up and pretty soon this road coming then down here is going to go bad my mission here is to try to bind these two roads together fill the void maintain the integrity of the road till this lasts so the first thing that has to be done most importantly it is is that it has to be clean clean clean see down here in this crack all the sand and crumb all the loose stuff I'm sweeping very hard I'm making sure I get all the loose crumbs out of this crack because anything loose is going to prevent us from getting a good bond and prevent those cold patch which isn't as good as had patch but when you're a homeowner you don't have options to getting half patch there are a couple grades of this asphalt patch this particular product is made right here in Michigan right here in Detroit Michigan and it's kind of nice the product is you'll see is pretty liquidy or viscous you can see all the tire and binders that are in here they're going to allow this to glue together after we give it a little tamping now there's two ways of compressing the asphalt patch they say simply to drive a vehicle over it to compress it no getting tire in our vehicle we're going to take and use a tamper we work pretty well we're going to take and pass we even use a little kerosene with the tamper if this sticks to it too hard well trick I've learned from the city workers that coming to the hardware store and now we need to compact it we drive this in that's going to get the tires in here to bind but this stuff does not go thin very well ashphalt patch when you put it on and you want to feather it send layer somewhere like if I put a thin layer in here that'd be the first to fail but where the asphalt patch is down in the crack you'll see that it'll hang for a very long time before it finally starts pushing out there so we got a couple low spots we're going to come back a little bit more hotter day you do this the better this the more liquid this asphalt patch gets and the better it's going to bind paint this one bag go the whole crack it's nice having the tamper I consider I'm doing as opposed to driving my car back and forth over this so there it is it's an asphalt patch on the road now we'll see how long this holds up see if this protects the section damp the road from serving to break up this should be just the ticket to keep this job going

I did a repair and cold patch never complete dry and now I have to return to do the job again.  this kind of material is just for small repairs don't drive over it or even let your car over the patch over night

Don’t use petroleum (diesel/kerosene) on your tools it will break down the cold mix!!!

I've learned always put a little more, especially on a large hole. Because once traffic runs over it a good bit it will sink

I'd like to know the brand name of the product you used. I like the fact that you can just pour it into the hole.

The bottom of my Dad's driveway where it meets the street is breaking apart and its a little drop off when you come out of the driveway. Would this work for that part?

Mr. Hardware, What did you do about your thin cracks? Are those taken care of by applying new driveway sealer?

I filled a huge crack just like this on my driveway. how long does cold patch last. the crack was on the edges so there is no traffic going over it.
