Home Improvement: It's Never Too Late [Sermon]

thank you so much for checking us out here Life Church further information putting additional content inserts and business online electrical model for download the white shirts are mine for the after school I hope you enjoy the message that's positive [Applause] amen today we are going to continue our home improvement series have you enjoyed this series alright good remember I told you you got to make it sound like I'm really good today we've enjoyed this series right right we should put our stuff up here first service more often because it gives you guys really excited but we've been in this series for a couple of weeks and in last week we looked at a story that Jesus told in Matthew chapter 7 it was actually the conclusion for his Sermon on the Mount and and he says there's there's two men there's a wise man and a foolish man there's a man who who built his house on the rock and when the storms came his house remained standing there was a foolish man who built his house on the stand and when the storms came his house fell with a mighty crash as we read last week and as we think about that well there there must have been some different information that the wise man had he must have known something about the soil conditions he he must have had some some extra insight that the the other men didn't have and that wasn't the case because as Jesus tells the story both men heard Jesus's words both men listen to the same teaching and really what it comes down to is is it's not so much in the hearing of God's Word but we learned last week that it's in the doing of God's Word we want to build our lives on that firm foundation we have to actually do what he says to do and and that is the difference and so the challenge last week was not to just be a hearer of the word but to be a doer in all aspects of the word and so that's kind of where we've been next week pastor Dobie will be preaching and he'll be preaching on what is love and if we're lucky he'll do the night at the Roxbury dance to go with it but but I talked with Pastor I said what do you feel and he said first Corinthians 13 and getting a look in in a picture of really what love is because we've gotten such a misconstrued concept an idea of what love is today and in getting back to what God's Word says about loving so that's where we're gonna be next week it's gonna be awesome pastor Dobie we preaching and then we'll finish it up on Father's Day but but today we're gonna be in Ephesians chapter 5 and so if you have your Bibles you can you can take them out you can turn there I'll be reading from the New Living Translation so if yours reads a little bit differently that will be why if you don't have your Bibles or if you're just too lazy to open your app on your phone the verses will be on the screens for you I mean I'm not saying anything I'm just saying if fusions chapter 5 we're gonna begin reading in verse 15 we're gonna conclude in verse number 20 and this is what Paul who's writing to the church in Ephesus says she says be careful how you live don't live like fools but like those who are wise that sounds like where we were last week don't live like fools but live like those who are wise verse 16 makes the most of every opportunity in these evil days don't act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do don't be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life instead be filled with the holy spirit singing Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves and making music to the Lord in your hearts and give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ let's pray for our time together this morning Lord we thank you for your word God even as we pray every single week we're not after more information but God we're after transformation which comes in the application of your word and help us to be doers and not just hearers help us to to pull principals out of the text and apply them to our lives and God as as we hear your word today these are not my words but Lord they are your words because your word accomplishes the purpose that it was sent out for your word does not return void my words have no power but your word has all authority so Lord as your word goes forth today help us to be that good soil that is that seed falls it would take root in our heart that it would produce a harvest of fruit in our lives the eternal fruit and fruit that remains help us not to be that hard soil that rocky soil that shallow soil but God make us that good soil today that applies your word in each and every way in Jesus name and everybody said amen amen how many of you guys like being late they like to be late ok nobody nobody likes to be late let me say it this way we say there's like how many of you guys are bothered when you're late ok put your hands down how many guys are not bothered when you're late be honest now listen if you want to plead the fifth and like not incriminate yourself and keep your head that's fine but one more time how are you guys like if you're late like no big deal whatever it starts when I get there if that's you raise your hand ok ok a couple of you there's two people that aren't raising their hands that are very close to me that I know should be raising their hands and they're both sitting on the front row right here next to each other my wife and my father now they they are gonna get thrown under the bus in a little bit they have this attitude of as long as I get there and the event is still going on I'm good I have and I know my mom as well because we're the saved ones in our family for us if I'm not 15 minutes early I'm late like that's just that's my attitude and I wish I could say that that's how I wish I could say that that's how I was brought up but it really wasn't I think it was just ingrained in me from being late so many times but I'm determined I'm not gonna be late anymore and then I married my wife and I'm late all the time now no I'm just kidding but but for me like and if you're like me if punctuality is high on your priority list if you're late if you're going somewhere that you know is like 15 minutes away and you have five minutes to get there there's like these feelings of anxiety that rise up inside of you and your hands start to sweat and I begin to drive a little bit more aggressively than maybe I wouldn't normally drive because I'm trying to make up for lost time and then my wife gets mad at me she's like why are you driving crazy I'm like because you made us late and she's like if you would have told me what time it was when I and so we have these conversations back and forth and I need to be on time and she as long as we get there we're good and that's the beauty of the differences that God has made us one but I hate I hate I hate being late have you ever been so late that you're like man there's no point in even going at this point right like do I do I even is it even worth it for me to leave the house now and go we had small group last week am I gonna tell you which member of my small group but we had a small group last week and it was our last week of meeting before we broke for the summer and so we said here's what we're gonna do let's let's start at 6:00 and and we'll have we'll have a barbecue and we'll cook some food and everybody bring aside and we'll we'll eat and we'll fellowship together and then we'll get into the lesson so we'll start about 6 o'clock and we'll get done about 8:00 8:15 somewhere around there ok that was the plan and so we're sitting there waiting and those of us who were on time we're sitting there waiting for everybody else to show up and everybody showed up except for one couple and I'm tagged like where are you guys at where are you guys at and it's no joke started at 6:00 it's 7:15 and I get a text we're waiting for the jalapeno poppers to come out what time did you put the jalapeno poppers in the oven because at that point if it's 7 o'clock and you haven't started the jalapeno poppers yet just stop at KFC on the way to small-group and get something I don't even care at that point like are you so she's no joke we all eat and then we had the dessert which was a wonderful little apple crisp dish that was made and it was fantastic and then like 7:30 an hour and a half let's show up with jalapeno poppers and everybody's like well I guess I'm gonna have a popper no like I have to it goes good on top of the app chrisp in my belly I've got some I've got some chicken and then I've got some Apple crisps and then I've got a jalapeno popper I know I'm set but there gets to be a point right where where you're like it's too late I'm not even gonna worry about it at that point have you guys ever been there I think it's too late for me and I think what happens is sometimes in our lives we can get to the point of feeling like it's too late it's too late for me to to live righteous it's too late for me to try and live a pure life because I've messed up in my past it's too late for me to to try and be the parent that I've always wanted to be to my kids because of the way that I've treated them up to this point because I haven't talked to them in 10 years because because I've messed up as a parent because I wasn't there I can't be the parent that I wanted to be so I it's just too late why should I even bother my marriages to the point that it's beyond saving so why should I even why should I even worry about it because it's it's too late my financial situation I wish I was at a different place financially I wish I was more prepared for the stage of life that I'm going into it's just it's too it's too late have you ever felt like it was too late in your own life we come into the place and and maybe maybe you can relate maybe you can can relate to that feeling like it's too late but today I want to tell you that's never too late we need to understand that it's not it's not too late and as I was studying for this message I began to look at stories of people who who were given great success later in life like who were the people that are huge successes that we would all all know about recognize the name but they didn't get a start until later in life for the first one that that I I saw the first one that came up was what came DUP came up it done came it done caved up this one is definitely going online the first one that done calmed up was was Colonel Sanders Colonel Sanders the chicken man right well no KFC but Colonel Sanders didn't sell his first KFC franchise until he was 65 years old we hear stories like that you know he was working in the small gas station convenience store and in that story ended up going out of business and so he had to say I'm just gonna everybody likes my chicken imma make I'm gonna make this chicken restaurant and at 65 begins to franchise them out Sam Walton didn't start it opened his for his Walmart until he was 44 Laura Ingalls Wilder do you know when her first Bert book was published when she was 65 she didn't start writing until later in life once her kids can convince her and encourage her to write kind of a memoir of her of her childhood growing up and so so all throughout throughout business throughout scripture throughout throughout time there are people who who didn't get their start too late and we need to understand that it's never too late it's never too late to live a Pure Life it's never too late to live a righteous life it's never too late to be the parent to your kids that you've always wanted to be that that you should have been that you weren't but it but today is a new day and now is the time it's never too late to start investing in your marriage it's never too late to start putting some money away and preparing for that time you want to retire is never too late to start thinking about where you want to go and how to get there see what the problem is here's the problem nobody nobody has a picture of what they want we know it's not what we want it to be well we don't have a clear picture of what we do want it to look like the first thing that we have to understand is we have to have a clear picture of what we want our marriages what do you want your marriage to look like what do you want your kids to look like what do you want your relationship with your children to look like what do you want your financial situation to look like what do you want your business to look like what do you want your education to look like what do you want your career to look like all of these different areas of our life do you have a clear picture of what you want it to look like because if we don't have a target that we're shooting for how do we know when we hit it or when we miss it in archery they tell you to aim small aim small miss small aim big miss big you can't just aim for the day I hope I hit the deer cuz you'll probably hit the deer but you probably hitting the button and then nothing's gonna happen if you ain't big you miss big but if you aim small if you have a small target of what you're wanting to hit then you know when you hit it then you're more accurate then then you you have greater success see in my life I have pictures of what I want things to look like I have pictures of what I want my relationship with my kids to look like I have a picture of what I want this little girl me and her relationship to look like she's the most beautiful thing in all the world your grace weasel and I want her to to grow up knowing the love of a father I want her to grow up knowing what security feels like I want her to grow up knowing what that's like so that she doesn't get to an age and not understand what what true love from a man looks like I want to show her in the way that I treat her mother of what one day she should be looking for I want to to to to treat her the way that she needs to expect to be treated one day so that when she gets to that age she won't have to go looking for for love or affirmation from some men because she's had it in her dad for 25 years before she started dating I know what I want my marriage to look like and I know what I want my fight I don't want to have to work until the day that I die I want to to be wise and a good steward with what God has given me so I'm putting money away and putting money aside and and say and why because I have a picture of what I wanted to look like and because of what I want it to look like I'm able to go through the steps we're gonna look at today to determine it my headed in that direction or my not see we have to get a clearer picture of what we want it to look like the first thing that as we look at this scripture and we take out different principles that we see is we have to treat and we have to view every day as an opportunity we have to view every day as an opportunity look at what he says in verse 16 says make the most of every opportunity in these evil days and the passion translation which is my wife's favorite translation this is wow he says it says take full advantage of every day as you spend your life for his purposes take full advantage of every day as you spend your life how many of us could honestly say that we take full advantage of every day you take full advantage as a parent do you take full advantage as a spouse do you take full advantage as as as a student do you take full advantage as a single person do you take full advantage in your finances listen you could wake up every day and go to Starbucks before you go to work and spend five dollars on a coffee each and every single day but if you want your finances to look different than they do today then rather than taking that five dollars at Starbucks every day and the three dollars on the candy bars of the gas station when you had to fill up in the seventeen dollars and lunch because you had to get the guac on your burrito because you can't have the burrito without the guac and then you get the chips in the guac and all of these even listen listen stop doing all of that if you spend five dollars a day on coffee rather than spending that on coffee if you put that in the bank you know how much money you'd have at the end of the year almost 2 grand and we come into church and say I want my finances to be different I want my finances to be healthy God I want you to bless my finances we're out there giving God's tide to the gas station into Chipotle into Mama's Pizza into all of these different places we're tithing somewhere we're just not bringing it to God and we're expecting God to bless us in return and guys like no cuz you're not making the most of the opportunities that I'm giving you good grief I'm preaching good man we have to view every day as an opportunity do you wake up thinking good Lord it's morning or do you wake up saying good morning Lord good morning Lord every breath that I breathe is a gift from him I'm not promised tomorrow I can't do anything about yesterday all I can do is take advantage of what he's given me today what I have is a gift and that's why it's called the present and we need to be present we need to live now and take advantage of where God has placed us what God has put in our hands and what God has put in front of us we need to take we need to take advantage and take every day as an opportunity to change the way we think about it your spouse how are you how are you actively today investing in your marriage how are you actively today investing in your relationship is that even a thought when you wake up God how can I be a better dad today God how can I be a better husband today God how can I be a better leader today God how can I be a better pastor today God how can I be better today than I was yesterday every day is an opportunity every day is an opportunity we just have to view it that way see what happens we get into this monotonous routine we do and we do when we do and we sleep and we repeat we do and we do and we do and we sleep and we repeat what would happen and how would we go through our days different if we woke up saying God make me aware of the opportunities that I have today to invest in people around me to share your love with people around me to be a light to those around me how would your world look different if we would just look at Scripture and say God help me to take full advantage help me to view every day's an opportunity as I live out not my purpose but your purpose we have to view each day as an opportunity the second thing that I see is we have to evaluate our actions look at what he says he says don't act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do don't be drunk with wine because that will ruin your life instead be filled with the holy spirit what he's saying really the deeper point of what he's saying here something that Paul writes all throughout his epistles and as you read the New Testament you see all the time he says don't be controlled don't be ruled by your flesh don't be ruled by your thoughts by your feelings by your emotions because those will all lie to you don't be ruled by that but instead be ruled by the Spirit don't live according to your own evil desires but instead live according to God's Word really that's what he's saying here and so for us if we want if we have that picture of what we want it to look like then every day we need to be evaluating our actions as parents we understand this because we tell our kids all the time at least I heard it all the time as a kid go to your room and think about what you've done have you guys ever heard that and really what that was code for was go to your room well I warm up my spanking shoulder because I am bringing the heat today go to your room and think about what you've done as parents we tell our kids that right think about what you know what did you do okay what are you going to do differently next time what are we doing we're saying evaluate your actions think before you act think before you say something as adults we forget about that as adults we think we understand and we know it all but when's the last time we got down to the end of the day and we sat down and really evaluated what happened and what we did that day do we sit down and do we evaluate our actions in light of where I'm going in light of what I want my marriage to look like what I want my kids to look like what I want my finances to look like in light of where I'm going that the decisions that I made today effect that positively or negatively did the conversations that I had today effect that positively or negatively did the actions that I did today are those helping me get to where I want to go or are they leading me in the other direction are we evaluating our actions listen I want to tell you though at times your pastor blows it listen listen the only woman the only woman other than my wife who could have that's righted that loud was a woman who lived two houses down for me for ten years she probably heard me yelling at my kids through our open windows and she saw me beating my dog in the backyard and she she's probably seen it so she can say that's right I know my pastors not perfect cuz I was his neighbor for ten years but listen I'm not perfect and there's times where I have to sit down and evaluate my actions listen guys are we investing into our our relationships with our spouse are we investing in our marriages because one thing that your wife needs one of her her major needs is communication all the ladies know about the guys listen we weren't created with that need we were not created with the need I love like if I go on a road trip with guys at least most guys this is like a broad stroke there are some of you that are just weird but I'm just kidding I'm just kidding but but like Christian Lyons Christians over our media in he interned here for a couple years and and we can get in a car me and Christian could drive from here or to put on some music say two words to each other the whole time get out at the end of it and be good and get out and be like that was a great trip man yes it was I can't even listen I can't even Drive 20 minutes to my parents house with my wife and if I only say two words to her the entire Drive I'm getting out and I'm in trouble and I'm sleeping on the couch that night because women have this need for communication guys we're not created with that need but because I know that my wife needs that then when I evaluate my actions I evaluate am i giving my wife what she needs and all even go to her baby am i doing am i okay are you good you need anything what can I do better and there are times where I get it right and there are times where I come home and I'm like yes I would love to sit down and talk to you for 45 minutes uninterrupted without any kids and tell you about every conversation I had today and tell you about the meetings that I had today and tell you the thoughts that I had when I was driving past that construction site today and tell you about all of the fine minut details of my life and there are times there are times few and far between where I get it right and I'm like yeah baby let's do this and there are times more often than not where I'm like no I don't want to do that I remember we went on a date this is a couple months ago and I had been traveling and I was out of town and and you know we were busy it was just one of those busy seasons ever you guys know those busy seasons in our marriage and we went out on a day we finally got a date night we got a sitter for the kids we went to dinner dinner was over I said baby what do you want to do now women need communication men we need companionship so we just wanna go do fun stuff so we got done I said baby what do you want to do she says I don't know okay what if we go to a movie no I don't go to a movie okay what do you want to do I don't care well we could go to this movie no I don't want to go okay we could go to the shooting range not I want to go shooting range okay so what do you want to do and here's her who's her answer we could go get coffee and talk we go get coffee and talk and my response was I don't think there's any coffee shops that are still open I think there is a coffee outage all across the city and I wish I could tell you I wish I could tell you that I read my wife's need in the moment evaluated where I wanted to go in my relationship with her and make the right decision but I didn't you know what I said I said I want to do that why don't want to do that here coffee and talk don't get coffee talk I'm gonna talk it all day last thing I want to do is sit down and have another meeting oh we will not do anything we can go to the driving range we will not talk the entire time it was a couple weeks later I I didn't even recognize it in the moment was a couple weeks later were in small group and we were reading the chapter about women needing communication and men needing companionship and it was like man I blew it hey baby I'm sorry like I completely I completely dropped the ball on that one but do we do that in our lives do we evaluate our actions do we have a picture of where we want to go do we view every day as an opportunity to take another step closer to that do we step back and evaluate see one of the things that we value your life church is excellence we say we strive to go from great to greater the only way you can go from great to greater is through constant evaluation the only way that you can continue to get better in your own life is through constant evaluation am i doing better today than I was yesterday am i further along the journey today than I was yesterday yes it might still be off in the distance but when you look back you're not where you want to be but at least you're not where you were when you started god you're doing something inside of me and no but every day I'm beginning to look a little bit more like you and every day I'm starting to to honor my husband way that the way that the church honors you and and everyday I'm starting to love my wife the way that Christ you loved the church and everyday I'm becoming a more accurate reflection of the Heavenly Father to my kids and every day my financial situation I'm beginning to be a better steward with what you've entrusted to me and every day I'm taking steps to where I want to go but it's constant evaluation that tells us if we're getting to that point or not then the final thing in in verse number 20 and he closes out this this section with this verse he says give thanks for everything give thanks for everything do you have an attitude of gratitude we have to establish an attitude of gratitude an attitude of gratitude that says no matter what's going on God thank you God thank you for who you are now thank you for what you've done in my life thank you for what you've given me guys thank you for the opportunity God thank you for the breath in my lungs God thank you that know my my career may not be where I want it to be but God thank you that I have a job god I might hate my job but there's so many people that don't have a job and God you've blessed me with this opportunity got you you blessed me with the ability tour got my marriage I might have made him a mess of it and I might feel like it's too late and and my wife might drive me crazy or my husband might drive me crazy or my kids might drive me crazy but God thank you thank you for what you've given me god help me to have an attitude of gratitude but it starts with our actions if we act this way if we if we view every day as an opportunity our actions reflect that our feelings will begin to follow angel says it all the time and she said in class on Wednesday actions lead feelings follow actions lead feelings follow jesus said it this way said wherever you put your treasure there your heart will be wherever you put your treasure whatever the action you are doing wherever you put your passion your time your energy your focus your love wherever you put that that's where your hearts going to be if you want your heart to be in your marriage are you investing your whore are you investing your treasure you're investing your time are you investing your energy are you investing your passion into that begin investing in your heart will follow your kids are you investing in them your heart will follow your finances are you investing are you being wise in that area you start putting your heart in that area your energy in that area your time in that area your heart will follow god help us to have an attitude of gratitude we need to start out we need to dream we need to have a picture of what we want it to look like as we get that picture god help me to see every day as an opportunity as every day is an opportunity I wake up with a different perspective and as I I have that perspective of looking for those opportunities I get down to the end of my day and I evaluate what did i do today and God make me grateful give me a heart that says thank you for everything amen stand with me this morning and let's pray you guys did a good job I think we'll post that one Lord we thank you for your word today god we thank you for who you are yeah we thank you for for what you've done what you are doing and got what you are going to do I thank you that every time we we look at your word it's it's challenging and it's encouraging and it's strengthening and and God there's times where we miss the mark and there's times where we feel like it's too late but Lord years it's never too late it's never too late to live pure it's never too late to to invest in our marriage it's never too late to to invest in love our kids God it's never too late to be a good steward with what you've given us God it's never too late as we go from this place I praise it that we would go and even as we heard last week we wouldn't be just a here but help us to be a doer God you've challenged us this week you've challenged us to to get a picture of what we want it to look like you've challenged us to wake up every morning to view it as an opportunity you've you've challenged us to to at the end of the day evaluate our actions did what I did today did the conversations the thoughts the attitudes that did my day push me closer towards what I want order to leave me further away god help us soon at the end of it all have an attitude of gratitude knowing that it's not because of who we are but it's because of who you are yeah we thank you we love you this morning go with us this week help us to be an accurate reflection of you in our world that we would be a reflection of your love your hope your grace to those around us we'd be the salt in the light that you've called us to be God we thank you and we love you in Jesus name and everybody said amen amen god bless you this morning if you need prayer our prayer team is down here at the altars we would love to agree with you and pray if there's anything that's happening in your life otherwise be dismissed god bless you we'll see you guys next week
