Broadlink Product Update 2019 : Hands On With The New Smart Home Products and App

it's ungodly o'clock and Nisha and I are about to set off to London to meet broad link a little bit nervous because well you know they are the weirdest company ever since January 2018 broad link have made some massive massive improvements and whilst they're not perfect and they still have some issues that we'll discuss later they have improved to a degree that I was willing to go and sit across a dinner table with them and hopefully not get murdered for the things that I've done a few videos have done previously have been quite harsh and rightly so at the time but things are now improved and I wanted to tell you about some of the things that are about to get even better you may have seen recently a notification from the IHC app to tell you that broad link are changing the name of their skill to save confusion I'm doing this because it's the most confusing thing I could possibly think of them doing but there is a good reason so the thing is they're releasing a new app and I know some of you are going a fourth app yay it's actually again a good thing so currently we have you control we have IHC and we have IHC for EU and they don't want to have all this global and EU stuff anymore they won't just run app you control and IHC they're not gonna phase it out I don't think because that will annoy the people that are using IHC so what they're doing instead is they're going to name skills for IHC as IHC and IHC for EU and they're going to have a brand new skill called broad link and therefore they need the name back because the name of the new app is you've guessed it broad link and it works like this very little is known about the new broad link app it is shrouded in mystery so mysterious even I haven't had a go with it yet I got the leaked version when they accidentally put it on the Play Store so I know that it's gonna look something like this this funny black and gold color and it looks like it's got a nice simple easy to use interface which I'm hoping is carried through to the final design you guys are actually gonna get to beta test it that's right I've spoken to the vice president's at broad link and he said he would like me to get you guys to test it out for him so I'll be telling you more about that too in an upcoming video from a new app to no app at all broad link have decided they are going to start selling products that in fact work directly with Google home and she that should not be named and I think if this then that which means you won't need the application that's a dimmable fog socket demo Pablo sockets I am so excited I think that means we'll be able to use our smart home assistance to set the level by percentage which is super super cool the other thing it has is sunrise and sunset modes now this is the point where I probably should have asked broad link what does that mean because I don't actually know what that means I assume it will mean one of two things either it will come on at nighttime automatically and go off in the morning automatically if that's what you set it to do or it will be doing the Philips hue thing where it comes up gradually to wake you up in the mornings which should be awesome whichever one of those two things it's great it's probably neither I'm probably just guessing it wrong the rm4 Pro and RM for many are smaller that that's about it there isn't a great deal of improvement here there is an accessory apparently which will allow them to detect humidity and temperature but I think we already had that with this thing quite a long time ago quite a long time ago the other improvements are it has a bigger eye or code set apparently but again I don't think that's a reason to buy it because this thing will work in the new app regardless so it's smaller a smart book brought linka finally doing a smart bulb it may or may not be this one right here that you can't have because it's mine this is the broad link smart bulb it will do the whole 16 million colors and brightness up down things and work with Google home and Sheila should not be named and if this then that and everything will be happy great a new smart bulb a party kit I don't have any photo of this I don't know what a party kit is but apparently it's something to do with dancing bulbs apparently they tends to Spotify I did I don't know what a party kiss is so when I said I met broad link on social media someone said oh did you roll over lit and tickle your belly did you you your friends now are you kind of they took me for bangers and mash I think god bless him it was the sweetest thing they said Paul you pick a meal something that we'd enjoy and I said I don't really know London I'd rather you guys picked something you wanted and I think they just went on Google and went what is the most English thing in the world and there it was bangers and mash I didn't even know a bangers and mash restaurants existed until I was sat in one eating bangers and mash I don't want to sound ungrateful honestly thank you broad link for that wonderful experience it was great they were instagramming it and everything so yes we're kind of friends at the moment I am not the type to sell out though I'm not gonna sit here and say everything is perfect I know there are still issues and I will point them out one I know that notifications don't currently work for their sensor stuff so the s-1 and s2 I think about called all that is currently broken the other issues are timers don't work and I have spoken to them about this and they have said they are currently putting everything they've got to into creating the new apps so fingers crossed all of that stuff will be fixed for the new app I'm hearing reports also that's for some reason now if you add a lump in IHC it isn't discovered by she that should not be named you have to use a user-defined I'm told which never used to work so that is super super random again I'm hoping it's going to be fixed in the new app I'm gonna start collecting a list of all the things that are broken so if you could hit me up in the comments and let me know any of the things that you think are currently busted I will go back to broad link and say these things are busted please fix them that's it for this week hope you've enjoyed this episode if you have please give it a thumbs up if you want to see some more of this guy hit that subscribe button if you want help support my channel like these amazing people here then you can do that at pay power and patreon and come hang out with me on social media at these places I'll see you next time ladies and gentlemen boys and girls when brought link messaged me and said hey do you want to come to dinner in London I kind of got myself I am being given the opportunity to let you guys be the first to play with it um that sounds rude I'm talking about an application not an appendage on your body this is what I saying the other thing it has is I can't remember

The Broadlink guys turned out to be absolutely lovely, very complimentary and more open than ever before to listen to feedback on their old products and their new products for 2019. Their Vice President is very candid with me and quick to respond, so I'm looking for feedback on any current issues so I can help them get the attention they need, please hit me up in the comments with any known issues you are experiencing so I can put together a list, I'm fairly confident there are still problems with the TC2 light switch, but I could be wrong!

A problem I’ve had is if my air conditioner is not listed in the ihc app and i choose to make it custom it doesn’t make it compatible with “who that should not be named”.

Hello Paul, Hello Broadlink. I have Broadlink 3 Pro. I've checked firmware version. Current is v20028 with date 2017-07-27. There is no update proposed. Do you want to say, that almost 2 years without firmware update is ok? Broadlink product is so perfect, that no update is required? Almost 2 years without any fix in your most intelligent product?

For me I can get the app working pretty well (I’m using IHC, and have it hooked in to Google Home). The issue is that it only intermittently switches on/off my Sky Q box. Don’t know if it’s to do with Sky, Broadlink, or that I learned the code to the Mini 3 using my harmony one remote?!

I suppose more prebuilt code sets wouldn’t go amiss for instance a full set for Sky Q

Really? IR learning doesn't work at all, RF learning fails at the end with orange LED left on, firmware update not working, ihc from the broadlink website has a different server so won't link accounts with Alexa, white and green thing fights for light control and any dusk to dawn sensor should be separate hardware to any device it controls, the….. oh, what's the use, just ask them how us foolish people get a refund.

It'll all suck and not work, the socket will turn off when you turn the light on and turn on when you turn the light off, they don't know up from down and have no real direction.

Hi Paul, first Sorry for my english is too basic. I talk you…

I buy the SONOFF switches but I noticed late that my house did not have the electricity installation required, the thing is that now I want to buy the Broadlink TC2, I have only one RM Pro + and my house is very wide, I also have a 433mhz remote controls that I have not used and I wanted to know if they can be used with the BL TC2, I have searched how to link them and I can not find them. You buy me the TC2 or it's better to buy more Philips Hue …

Hi Paul. Have you ever reviewed the Brunt blind engine for automating your blinds by driving the chain/chord? I am really between 2 minds to get one but not quite sure yet (wifey!!) or should I just go ahead and order it? It's not widely available and price range is a bit high.

I don't know why please tell the CEO too.

My RM Pro+ works fine with the IHC app.
But recently when I tried to control through google assistant, it only says "xxxxx isn't available. you might want to try setting it up again"

Busted issue: The RM Mini 3 sometimes miss-hits commands. I've even put 0.5 delay between button presses and it still misses to get 5 button presses in a row on the TV. Please Please Please fix this and bring the accuracy up.

I have broadlink mini but there are still lot of issues with it, i use it mostly for tv and tv channel list doesnt work well, sometimes if you had a channel like "28" rm just recognizes "2" or "8" i think you had the same issues in video you made.
Then they should have a option for hdmi inputs like harmony has, my samsung tv doesnt have a hdmi1 ou hdmi2 button, so if you want to make a routine to watch tv you have to do a lot of "workarounds" to go to right input

Paul,   I have a list of items, but some may have been fixed:1. RF devices cannot be controlled using Alexa (RF automatic blinds)2. If RM PRO loses network, all devices have to be relearned. (Broadlink app had a great backup feature, IHC does not have restore feature.)3. If RM Pro gets knocked off network, have to fight to get it back on network.4. Have option to add fans and AC, but not electronic fireplaces which are common in US.Thanks,Jon

    Here are my two cents:
    1) The app should save learned devices (!!!) in the user account, so that upgrading app or firmware does not kill everything
    2) RM Pro: add a SMA connector, so that one can upgrade RF range by using an external antenna
    3) RM Pro: add an ethernet port, so that we don't have to use Wifi (not that stable, limited range, radiation 24/7)
    4) Wall and ceiling mounts for all devices, preferably with hidden power adapter inside the housing
    5) More sensors, preferably two way connected (most RF433 sensors only have one way), powered by simple rechargable batteries (e.g. 2x AAA) and small in size! Things to measure: air quality (e.g. carbon dioxide), humidity, temperature, pressure, light/dark, wind, motion, noise, power consumption etc. There are tons of useful things to do with sensors like controlling the marquee (wind, sun and rain sensor), automating the lights and the blinds (motion and noise sensor) while keeping the normal switches (very important!), getting alarm messages if the dishwasher or washing machine floods the floor (water sensor), automating ventilation (air quality, humidity and temperature sensor), making "old fashioned" devices smart by power metering and switching (power consumption sensor with remote switch) etc.
    6) Security and safety devices, like smart locks (entering by code, RFID and/or RF signal – there seem to be only Wifi, Bluetooth and 868MhZ devices on the market), RF-ID and or NFC keychains
7 […] There are tons of ideas left! 🙂 Maybe I could write an email…?

Paul, I am getting a "is not responding, please check your network connection and power supply" ??? Takes about 10-20 seconds for the request to register. This is definitely a broad link issue. All other ( hub, smart plugs, etc) are good. My speed is 200 + mbps and is not an issue. Do you have a video on this? If so what's its header?

I tweeted you (no reply, but I won't hate you for long…. maybe!) about an issue I have with a friend's RM Pro where it just said "local only" and the info in the app wasn't going up to the cloud. Also, the fact the Skill for the UK version had apparently disappeared from the Amazon platform. It's VERY confusing having UK and separate EU apps, especially when they have different functions (IR vs RF etc.). Don't understand why this is necessary – especially as there are US apps too. It's not for the faint-hearted is it? Cheers mate – and keep up the fantastic work.

I'm still having problems with the tc2-3. 2 related issues I think. I have configured the switch in ihc for EU app, and that works great. But, if I create a scene in ihc it gives the switches weird names and the scene doesn't work, hence second issue, no response to alexa commands. Tempted to reset whole device but that will be painful. Any idea how far away the new app is? If not too long I would rather wait and do a full reset then.

Hey Paul, Advice if possible pal. I'm still using RM Pluggin as despite all my endeavours resetting the RM Pro using a pin for times exceeding a minute I cant get the damn thing to reset to default which means I'm stuck on my old wifi ssid etc and having to use an old android phone as the home for the RM pluggin. I cab't get teh app to recognise the pro or the smaller IR one I have at all. All works well with "her that shall not be named" ( why did I type that, she can't read) still, and I can still add IR and RF devices using the pluggin but I would so like to join teh 21st century and use the app. Any help would be appreciated even if its " buy a new one". Cheers fella, Pete

    Hi Paul:
Software quality and API: Broadlink pushes direct integration with main services. But what with open API and ablility to integrate Broadlink products on low level. Dozens of products and no official API description, no official integration libraries, no communication via MQTT messages (this is standard). There are many people with OpenHAB, HomeAutomation, Domoticz installations. They have no officially supported software. All libraries are reverse engineering tries. Is Broadlink able to make their ecosystem more friendly for hobbyists and developers?

    Hi Paul:
TC2 switches are good: RF communication, pretty design and lack of requirement to have separate power. We all know about "blinking problem of TC2" (switch starts to blink randomly). I don't understand why TC2 has no possibility to read current switch state. That's very annoying. Is this hardware problem (no handshake between RM Pro and TC2) or something to fix on software level?

    Hi Paul:
    1. Ability to define network preferences for Broadlink products manually. Till now it is automatically detected via app. Why I cannot define ip address, gateway and network mask in Broadlink app?

Of course Broadlink can say: buy better router and do static ip – mac assignment there. But I have router from my ISP provider and have no ability to do it. I don't want buy additional router to manage Broadlink configuration issues. Broadink requires both: IP and MAC for communication. If IP address chages there are problems with communication.

    2. Disconnect from the cloud – I have Broadlink products but I don't use cloud features, I just send commands with python script.

The same situtation. Of course I can block all traffic to the cloud with router configuration. But I want, as a customer, have abiity to disable cloud features and stay within my network. I can manage it but many of Broadlink users have no idea how to do it.
