NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.>>SPEAKER: THANK YOU, PLEASE BE SEATED. AND NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE MR. TIM LUING.>>TIM LUING: GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR
JOINING US TODAY. I’M EXCITED BECAUSE TODAY I GET TO SPEAK ABOUT
OUR STUDENTS AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR THE STUDENT TO COME FIRST. BEFORE WE GET TO OUR STUDENTS, LET’S SPEND
A FEW MINUTES TALKING ABOUT MY FATHER. OF COURSE, A FEW MINUTES WON’T DO JUSTICE
TO MY FATHER’S CAREER AT BERKELEY COLLEGE, BUT IT WILL PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO THE
MAN AND INTO THE IMPACT HE HAD ON BERKELEY COLLEGE. MY FATHER GREW UP IN A SMALL TOWN IN IOWA
DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION. HIS MOTHER WAS A SCHOOL TEACHER. HIS FATHER WAS A MAILMAN. HE BEGAN WORKING ODD JOBS WHEN HE WAS JUST
8 YEARS OLD. HE WORKED HIS WAY THROUGH COLLEGE, GRADUATING
FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA WITH HONORS. HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY WELL IN THE KOREAN WAR. HE THEN STARTED AS A TEXTBOOK SALESMAN FOR
MCGRAW HILL WHERE HE WORKED HIS WAY UP TO BECOME THE NATIONAL SALES MANAGER FOR PRIVATE
BUSINESS SCHOOLS. MY FATHER MADE IT HIS PASSION TO LEARN ABOUT
EVERY MAJOR SCHOOL ACCOUNT, THE IMPORTANT STAKEHOLDERS, AND THE BEST PRACTICES THAT
MADE EACH SCHOOL SUCCESSFUL. AFTER ABOUT TEN YEARS OF VISITING SCHOOLS,
AN OPPORTUNITY PRESENTED ITSELF. NOT HAVING THE FINANCIAL WHEREWITHAL HIMSELF,
HE HAD TO ACT SMART AND BE BRAZEN ENDING UP AN EQUAL PARTNER WITH A LOAN FOR HIS SHARE
OF THE INVESTMENT. HE WAS ABOUT TO COMBINE HIS PASSION FOR BUSINESS
AND HIS FAMILY’S LOVE FOR EDUCATION. SO IN 1965, AT 35 YEARS OLD, MY FATHER OWNED
14% OF THE BERKELEY SCHOOLS, AND IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE HE WAS THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT. HOWARD NEWHOUSE BECAME PRESIDENT. MY FATHER SPENT THE YEAR OVERHAULING JUST
ABOUT EVERY AREA OF THE SCHOOL. THE BERKELEY WAY WAS BORN, AN UNCOMPROMISING
COMMITMENT TO QUALITY. HE LENGTHENED THE PROGRAMS, CHAMPIONED QUALITY
IN THE CLASSROOM, REINVIGORATED THE MARKETING AND ALL PUBLICATIONS, IMPROVED FACILITIES,
UPGRADED STAFFING, PUT A MAJOR FOCUS ON JOBS AFTER GRADUATION, AND LED THE SCHOOLS THROUGH
ACCREDITATION FOR THE FIRST TIME. AND, YES, THAT WAS ALL DURING THAT ONE FIRST
YEAR. MY FATHER WAS ALWAYS A VISIONARY, ALWAYS LOOKING
TO THE FUTURE TO GUIDE HIS PATH. HE BELIEVED THAT WOMEN DESERVED THE SAME ACCESS
TO A QUALITY EDUCATION THAT MEN DID. WITHIN A YEAR, THAT BECAME A REALITY. HIS VISION FOR BERKELEY FROM THE START WAS
TO BECOME A JUNIOR COLLEGE. HE BELIEVED OUR STUDENTS DESERVED MORE THAN
JUST SHORT TERM PROGRAMS. STUDENTS DESERVED TWO YEAR PROGRAMS THAT WOULD
MAKE THEM MORE MARKETABLE IN THE WORKPLACE. MORE SKILLS EQUALED BETTER JOBS. WITHIN A YEAR, THAT HAD BECOME A REALITY. HE ALSO BELIEVED THAT WOMEN SHOULD NOT BE
LIMITED TO SECRETARIAL OR ADMINISTRATIVE CAREERS. THE FASHION PROGRAM STARTED IN 1970 AND BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION PROGRAMS BEGAN IN THE ’80S. MY FATHER DIDN’T ACHIEVE ALL OF THIS ON HIS
OWN. HE HAD VISION BUT HE WAS ALSO A MASTER IN
RECOGNIZING AND DEVELOPING TALENT. HE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT BERKELEY’S GREATEST
STRENGTH IS ITS PEOPLE. MY FATHER WAS PART OF A HARD WORKING, CLOSE
KNIT TEAM WHO EXCELLED FOR DECADES. HE WOULD ALWAYS RECOGNIZE THAT THAT TEAM WAS
RESPONSIBLE FOR BERKELEY’S SUCCESSES. THE FIRST FEW YEARS SET THE STAGE FOR THE
NEXT TWO DECADES OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS, BERKELEY ACHIEVED
LICENSURE AS A COLLEGE IN NEW JERSEY, BECAME AUTHORIZED BY THE NEW YORK STATE BOARD OF
REGENTS TO AWARD DEGREES IN NEW YORK, ACHIEVED MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITATION, EXPANDED CAMPUSES,
PROGRAM OFFERINGS AND GAINED AUTHORIZATION TO AWARD ASSOCIATE AND BACHELOR’S DEGREES
WELL. WITH EXTRAORDINARY VISION AND FIERCE DETERMINATION,
MY FATHER LED BERKELEY COLLEGE MORE THEN THAN 35 YEARS. SO FAR IN MY REMARKS ABOUT MY FATHER, I DIDN’T
ONCE MENTION THE STUDENT ALWAYS COMES FIRST OR DID YOU HEAR IT? I DID. I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WHEN MY FATHER SAT
ME DOWN ONE DAY AND TOLD ME THAT WHEN MAKING A DECISION ALWAYS ASK YOURSELF WHAT WOULD
YOUR DECISION BE IF YOU PUT THE STUDENT FIRST. HE WENT ON TO TELL ME THAT WITH THE MULTITUDE
OF DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE EVERY DAY AT BERKELEY THAT “STUDENT COMES FIRST” PHILOSOPHY HOLDS
TRUE EVERY TIME. IT DOESN’T MEAN THE STUDENT GETS WHAT THEY
WANT; IT MEANS WE DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE STUDENT. MANY OF HIS POLICIES WERE ROOTED WITH THE
STUDENT COMING FIRST. ANSWER THE PHONE IN NO MORE THAN THREE RINGS. IF IT’S A STUDENT, THEY DON’T DESERVE TO WAIT. CLEAN DESK POLICY, MAKE OUR STUDENTS FEEL
THAT NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THEY ARE. AND HOW ABOUT NO BOXES IN THE OFFICES OR THE
LOBBY? IF YOU INVITED A GUEST INTO YOUR HOME, WOULD
YOU HAVE BOXES LYING AROUND? SO TREAT OUR STUDENTS LIKE GUESTS. NOW, MANY OF US AT BERKELEY TODAY TALK ABOUT
STUDENTS COMING FIRST. IT’S CENTRAL TO OUR MISSION, VISION AND VALUES. BUT WHAT DOES IT REALLY MEAN TO PUT STUDENTS
FIRST? DOES IT MEAN WE PARK FARTHER AWAY WHEN IT
RAINS SO STUDENTS GET A BETTER SPACE? DOES IT MEAN DELAYING LUNCH IN ORDER TO HELP
A STUDENT WITH A CHALLENGE? DOES IT MEAN ALWAYS PUTTING 100% EFFORT INTO
RUNNING A STUDENT EVENT? I’M SURE EACH OF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN THOUGHTS
AND IDEAS ON HOW WE PUT STUDENTS FIRST. MY FATHER WOULD AGREE WITH ALL OF THESE EXAMPLES
AND PROBABLY ALL OF THE ONES YOU JUST THOUGHT OF ALTHOUGH THEY WOULD JUST SCRATCH THE SURFACE
OF HIS PASSION FOR OUR STUDENTS. I’VE MENTIONED THAT MY FATHER WAS A GREAT
VISIONARY, AND WE JUST DISCUSSED HIS BELIEF IN THE STUDENT ALWAYS COMING FIRST. MOLD THE TWO TOGETHER AND WHAT DO WE GET? STUDENT COMING FIRST, GREAT VISION. WE GET WHAT WE SEE HERE TODAY. LOOK AROUND AT THE STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF,
BUILDINGS, PROGRAMS, ACCREDITATIONS, VISION, STUDENTS COMING FIRST. SOMEWHAT OF A TRICK QUESTION. LET’S TAKE A QUICK LOOK AT HIS EARLY VISION
AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS, BUT DO IT WITH A STUDENT FIRST LENS. PUT YOURSELF IN MY FATHER’S SHOES. YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR VISION. KEEP STUDENTS FIRST IN THE FOREFRONT AS I’M
LISTING BERKELEY’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS. SEE IF YOU VIEW THOSE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A
DIFFERENT LIGHT NOW BY KEEPING THE STUDENT FIRST. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, CREATING A WHOLESOME
ATMOSPHERE FOR LEARNING, UPGRADING FACILITIES, UPGRADING STAFFING, A MAJOR FOCUS ON JOBS,
BECOMING A JUNIOR COLLEGE, EQUAL ACCESS TO EDUCATION, EXPANDED PROGRAMS, EXPANDED CAMPUSES,
COLLEGIATE STATUS AND FINALLY MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITATION. CAN YOU SEE HOW THE STUDENT COULD BE THE BEDROCK
OF EACH OF THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS? BUT WAIT, MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITATION? HOW IS GETTING ACCREDITATION STUDENT FIRST? WHAT DO YOU TELL PEOPLE WHEN THEY ASK WHY
YOU ARE A MIDDLE STATES OR WHY BERKELEY IS MIDDLE STATES ACCREDITED? MANY OF US MIGHT SAY IT’S THE HIGHEST STANDARD
OF EXCELLENCE OR A SIGN OF QUALITY. BUT THIS ISN’T HOW MY FATHER THOUGHT OF ACCREDITATION. IN MARCH OF 1969, MY FATHER MADE A SPEECH
WHERE HE SAID ACCREDITATION IS A MOST IMPORTANT STEP TOWARD ACHIEVING TRANSFERABILITY OF CREDITS
AND DEGREE GRANTING PRIVILEGES. FOR MY FATHER, EVEN ACCREDITATION WAS ABOUT
THE STUDENT COMING FIRST. TODAY WE STILL SEE THIS VISION WITH STUDENTS
IN OUR PLANNING. CAN YOU THINK OF ANY STRATEGIC PLANNING WHERE
THE STUDENT IS THE BEDROCK OF THE INITIATIVE? CERTAINLY RENAISSANCE HALL IS A GOOD EXAMPLE,
AND THE LPN TO BSN PROGRAM AT THE SCHOOL OF HEALTH IS ANOTHER. I COULD GO ON AND ON. MY FATHER WOULD BE PROUD. IN THE 1981 SPEECH TO OUR STUDENTS, MY FATHER
QUOTED OUR 1931 CATALOG. I’LL END WITH THE SAME QUOTE BUT WITH MY RESPONSE. SO THE 1931 CATALOG, “IT IS TO THE YOUNG WOMAN’S
ADVANTAGE IN CONSIDERING HER FUTURE TO PREPARE HERSELF PROPERLY FOR HER CHOSEN PLACE IN THE
WORLD.” WHEN STUDENTS PUT THEIR TRUST IN BERKELEY
COLLEGE TO HELP THEM GET TO THEIR CHOSEN PLACE, AS MANY HAVE DONE OVER THE LAST 88 YEARS,
WE CANNOT DISAPPOINT. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]
OUR NEXT SPEAKER IS LINDA HERINYA JONES. LINDA SERVED AS MY FATHER’S PERSONAL ASSISTANT
FOR 25 YEARS. SHE BECAME THE FIRST BOARD SECRETARY AND RETIRED
AS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ADMINISTRATION. AFTER LINDA MOVED AWAY AND MY FATHER RETIRED,
THEY STAYED IN TOUCH UNTIL HIS DEATH. AND MY FATHER CONSIDERED LINDA AND HER HUSBAND
JACK AMONG HIS DEAREST FRIENDS. LINDA HELPED MY FATHER PRODUCE BERKELEY’S
75TH ANNIVERSARY BOOK AND HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY. MY FATHER ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS IN CHARGE,
BUT THOSE OF US CLOSE TO HIM KNEW LINDA WAS THE REAL BOSS. LINDA HERINYA JONES. [ APPLAUSE ]
DO YOU WANT THIS OR I THINK YOU ARE GOOD.>>THANK YOU. WOW. I AM VERY PROUD TO SAY I AM A 1967 GRADUATE
OF THE BERKELEY SCHOOL. [ APPLAUSE ]
BUT I’M VERY, VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT I WAS LARRY LUING’S SECRETARY FOR OVER 25 YEARS. LARRY AND I HAD A LOT OF THINGS IN COMMON. HE HATED TO SPEAK IN PUBLIC. ME, TOO. [ LAUGHTER ]
HE HAD AN OLD FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE MENTIONED BEFORE HOWARD NEWHOUSE. HOWARD WAS THE FIRST PERSON UNDER MY TIME
BE PRESIDENT OF BERKELEY. BUT HE WAS A MASTERFUL SPEAKER, ALWAYS RIGHT
ON TARGET. AND I ASKED HIM ONE TIME, “ARE YOU EVER NERVOUS?” AND HE SAID, “ALL THE TIME.” HE SAID, “LOOK OUT AT YOUR AUDIENCE AND PRETEND
THEY’RE NAKED.” IT’S AN OLD CLICHE BUT I DECIDED THAT IT MAY
NOT BE TOO PRETTY. IF YOU WERE SITTING AROUND MY DINING ROOM
TABLE, I WOULD BE ABLE TO TALK ON AND ON ABOUT LARRY. I’M GOING TO PRETEND YOU ARE ALL IN MY DINING
ROOM AND WE’RE JUST SITTING AROUND. JACK, DEAR, WE NEED A BIGGER HOUSE. AS I SAID, LARRY AND I HAVE A LOT OF THINGS
IN COMMON: OUR WORK ETHIC, OUR LOYALTY, OUR LOVE OF BERKELEY JUST TO NAME A FEW. BUT WE DIFFERED ON ONE THING: I HATE CHANGE. STILL DO. HE LOVED CHANGE. HE CHANGED EVERYTHING. AND TIM SPOKE ON A FEW OF MY ITEMS. HE ADDED PROGRAMS. HE CHANGED COURSE DESCRIPTIONS YEARLY, IF
NOT MORE OFTEN. HE WENT TO A 12 MONTH CALENDAR SO WE UTILIZED
THE CAMPUS 12 MONTHS OF THE YEAR. HE WAS AN INNOVATOR. EARLY ON HE ADDED A FASHION PROGRAM, WORKED
REAL WELL WITH THE SECRETARIAL PROGRAM. HE ADDED BUSINESS AND THEN ADDED MORE PROGRAMS. BUT HE SUGGESTED THAT WE ADD MALE STUDENTS
AND I SAID, “COME ON, YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING. THIS IS A NICE NICE LITTLE SECRETARIAL SCHOOL
FOR WOMEN.” I HAVE A STORY. MY 11 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER WAS THE ONLY
GIRL ON A ROBOTICS TEAM IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, AND ONE DAY SHE CAME HOME AND ANNOUNCED: “BOYS
ARE SMELLY.” SHE’S 13 NOW AND I’M NOT GOING TO CHANGE HER
OPINION ABOUT THAT, BUT LARRY WANTED THESE CREATURES AT OUR SCHOOL. [ LAUGHTER ]
OF COURSE, LARRY WAS RIGHT. HE ADDED MALE STUDENTS, EVENING CLASSES, ADULT
STUDENTS, INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS, AND NOW WE HAVE ONLINE CLASSES. CATALOGS CONSTANTLY CHANGED, EQUIPMENT ALWAYS
UPGRADED. MY LITTLE SECRETARIAL SCHOOL WOULD HAVE GONE
OUT OF BUSINESS A LONG TIME AGO, BUT LOOK AROUND, LARRY’S VISION HAS FLOURISHED INTO
A WORLD CLASS COLLEGE. FROM A PERSONAL VIEWPOINT, I STARTED WORKING
FOR LARRY RIGHT OUT OF SCHOOL IN 1967. IN 1970, I SADLY HANDED HIM MY RESIGNATION
AS I WAS DUE TO HAVE MY FIRST CHILD. HE RESPONDED, “WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK FROM
HOME?” I SAID, “WOW.” NO EMPLOYER WAS OFFERING WORK AT HOME IN 1970. ONCE A WEEK, I WOULD COME TO THE OFFICE AND
BRING MY WORK ACCOMPLISHED AND GET NEW THINGS. I WAS ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH TECHNOLOGY SO THAT
WHEN I DID RETURN TO THE WORKFORCE, I DIDN’T HAVE A LARGE CURVE TO LEARN. IN 1972, ONLY TWO YEARS LATER, I MENTIONED
TO LARRY THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO RETURN TO WORK. BUT ONLY FROM 8:00 A.M. TO NOON AS I HAD A BABY SITTER GRANDMA. LARRY SAID GREAT. AND BERKELEY FLEX TIME WAS INVENTED. THERE WERE THE DAYS THAT I NEEDED TO BRING
MY TODDLER TO WORK. THE OFFICIAL BRING YOUR DAUGHTER TO WORK DAY
WAS NOT INTRODUCED UNTIL 1993 BY GLORIA STEINEM. LARRY WAS 20 YEARS AHEAD OF HER. MANY TIMES LARRY WOULD HAVE HIS YOUNGEST SON
BRIAN WITH HIM WOULD BE ABOUT THE SAME AGE AS MY DAUGHTER AT THE TIME. LARRY AND I WOULD WORK AND THE KIDS WOULD
PLAY. WE HAD LEGOS ALL OVER THE PLACE. IT WASN’T ALWAYS EASY. THERE WAS THE DAY THAT MY TWO YEAR OLD FOUND
A BOBBY PIN AND THOUGHT IT WOULD FIT REALLY NICE INTO THE ELECTRIC SOCKET. LUCKILY SHE WAS FINE, BUT IT WAS THE DAY THAT
THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AT BERKELEY. I’M NOT SURE LARRY EVER KNEW THAT. THE SCHOOLS CONTINUED TO CHANGE AND OUR CHILDREN
GREW. I’M NOT REFERRING TO JUST MY KIDS, BUT ALL
THE BERKELEY CHILDREN. LARRY OFFERED THEM EMPLOYMENT. NOT ONLY WAS IT CHEAP LABOR, WHICH HE WAS
GOOD AT, BUT IT REALLY GAVE THE KIDS A WORK ETHIC THAT I KNOW MY KIDS STILL HAVE TODAY. WE WOULD BE INUNDATED WITH EMPLOYEES KIDS
IN THE SUMMER. WE REFERRED TO THEM LOVINGLY AS “THE BERKELEY
BRATS.” BRIAN MAHER, I SAW YOU EARLIER. ARE YOU HERE? BRIAN IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL BERKELEY BRATS. [ LAUGHTER ]
ASK HIM SOME TIME AND HE WILL TELL YOU A WONDERFUL STORY ABOUT CUTTING RUBBER BANDS. BUT, OF COURSE, LARRY WAS A FIGHTER. BERKELEY HAD DEVELOPED A TOP NOTCH, TWO YEAR
SECRETARIAL PROGRAM. COMMUNITY COLLEGES OFFERED SECRETARIAL PROGRAMS
BUT OURS WAS BETTER. THEIRS OFFERED CREDITS WHICH COULD BE TRANSFERRED
TO FOUR YEAR COLLEGES. IT WAS ILLEGAL FOR US TO DO THAT. LARRY DIDN’T BELIEVE IT WAS FAIR TO OUR STUDENTS. AS YOU SAID, TIM, STUDENTS CAME FIRST. THAT STARTED YEARS AND YEARS OF DEBATING WITH
NEW JERSEY STATE AND THEN NEW YORK STATE. WE HELD MEETINGS, PREPARED DOCUMENTS, HELD
MORE MEETINGS, PREPARED MORE DOCUMENTS, AND WERE INSPECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN. OUR LIBRARIES NEEDED TO BE EXPANDED. THE FACULTY NEEDED MORE CREDENTIALS. ACCREDITATION BECAME A TOP PRIORITY AND LARRY
WAS STUBBORN. HE WOULDN’T GIVE UP. WE WERE FIRST AMONG OUR COMPETITION TO FINALLY
GET THE DEGREE PRIVILEGE. LOOK WHERE WE ARE NOW. LOOK WHERE WE ARE NOW. LARRY GAVE MUCH OF HIS LIFE TO IMPROVE EDUCATION
AND IN PARTICULAR BERKELEY. HE WAS VERY PROUD OF HIS SONS AND VERY HAPPY
THAT THEY CHOSE TO CONTINUE AND IMPROVE UPON THE BERKELEY MISSION. THIS STATUE OF LARRY, WHICH I LOOK FORWARD
TO SEEING, IS A VERY WELL DESERVED HONOR. I COULD GO ON AND ON, BUT IT MAY RAIN. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT LARRY,
YOU ARE WELCOME AROUND OUR DINING ROOM TABLE ANY TIME. JUST, PLEASE, BRING DESSERT. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>SPEAKER: AND NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE AND WELCOME TO THE PODIUM PRESIDENT OF BERKELEY
COLLEGE, MICHAEL J. SMITH. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>PRESIDENT SMITH: SO IN MY ROLE HERE AT BERKELEY COLLEGE, I GET ASKED TO SPEAK QUITE
OFTEN AND I’M COMFORTABLE WITH IT. IT’S SOMETHING YOU GET ACCUSTOMED TO AND THE
MORE YOU DO IT, THE BETTER YOU GET AT IT. SO WHEN I WAS ASKED TO BE ON THE AGENDA FOR
TODAY, THE FIRST FEELING THAT I HAD WAS REALLY HONORED BECAUSE I HAVE A VERY, VERY SPECIAL
FEELING IN MY HEART FOR LARRY LUING. AND THEN I STARTED THE MORE I THOUGHT ABOUT
IT, THE LESS I WANTED TO DO IT. BECAUSE I WANTED TO BE IN THE MOMENT. I WANTED TO BE HERE IN AND LISTEN TO WHAT
EVERYBODY ELSE SAID. MY FEELINGS ABOUT LARRY ARE PERSONAL. IN THE NUMBER OF YEARS I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY
TO SPEAK TO YOU BEFORE WE HAD HERE IN OUR HISTORIES TOGETHER, EVERYONE YOU HAVE SPECIAL
MEANINGS AND FEELING ABOUT WHO LARRY WAS TO YOU. IF YOU STARTED TO YOU KNOW, START RECOUNTING
YOUR STORIES ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WHO YOU DID AND WHAT LARRY MEANT TO YOU, WE COULD
BE HERE THROUGH THE FALL, NO LESS THROUGH THE RAIN. THE FIRST THING ABOUT I WANT TO SAY ABOUT
TODAY IS THAT MY SENSE IS THAT LARRY LUING WOULD NOT LIKE TODAY. HE WOULD NOT LIKE TO HAVE A STATUE OF HIMSELF
OUT HERE. IF YOU GOT TO KNOW LARRY AND WORK WITH HIM,
HE HAD ONE SORT OF PUBLIC PERSONA, BUT HIS PERSONAL PERSONA IS THAT MY SENSE OF HIM IS
THAT HE WAS A VERY SHY MAN. HE WAS SHY. BUT IF YOU WENT INTO A ROOM WITH HIM WITH
OTHER PEOPLE THERE, HE COULD WORK A ROOM AS WELL AS OR BETTER THAN ANY ELECTED OFFICIAL
YOU EVER MET. HE MADE TIME FOR EVERY SINGLE INDIVIDUAL. HE MADE IT PERSONAL. IT WASN’T PERFUNCTORY. HE WOULD SPEAK WITH THEM PERSONALLY AND MAKE
A PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH EACH PERSON EVERY TIME HE WALKED INTO A ROOM. I OFTEN DESCRIBE LARRY AS THE BEST DECISION
MAKER I EVER MET IN MY LIFE. THE POINT BEING THAT NOT THAT HE WAS ALWAYS
RIGHT. HE WAS RIGHT A LOT OF THE TIME, BUT HE WAS
SOMEONE WHO WAS SO UNIQUE THAT IF HE DID MAKE A MISTAKE OR HE FELT SOMETHING WASN’T GOING
RIGHT, HIS EGO WASN’T ATTACHED TO THE DECISION AND HE WOULD REVERSE AND SAY, NO THIS IS NOT
WORKING, LET’S CHANGE MY IT. MYSELF AND SO MANY OTHERS, YOU WORK THROUGH
THE CAREER, YOU WANT TO BE PROVEN RIGHT. I’M GOING TO DOUBLE DOWN AND MAKE SURE I’M
RIGHT AND WORK HARDER TO DO IT. NOT LARRY. HE WOULD CORRECT AND MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT AND
THAT’S WHAT A GOOD DECISION MAKER DOES. AND THAT’S PROBABLY ONE OF THE KEY THINGS
I’VE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM HIM OVER THE COURSE OF MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER. HOW CAN I BE MORE LIKE LARRY IN THAT REGARD
THAT WHEN I DO MAKE MISTAKES NOT HAVING TO PROVE MYSELF RIGHT AND GOING AHEAD AND DOING
WHAT IS IN THE BEST INTEREST AS TIM SPOKE ABOUT TO THE BEST INTEREST IS NOT ABOUT ME,
MY EGO, NOT ABOUT ANY OF OUR EGOS, IT’S ABOUT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE STUDENTS. WE HAD MENTIONED LINDA WAS TALKING ABOUT LARRY’S
VISION. LARRY’S VISION WAS LITERAL AND FIGURATIVE. IT’S INTERESTING THAT IF YOU EVER HAD THE
OPPORTUNITY OR THE INVITATION TO BE IN LARRY’S HOME OR WHERE HE PLACES HE LIVED, IT WAS UNCANNY
BECAUSE HE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL VISIONS WHERE HE LIVED. IF YOU LOOKED OUT THE WINDOWS HE JUST HAD
SPECTACULAR VIEWS OF WHERE HE WAS. THE SAME KIND OF THING HERE. HIS VISION HERE AT BERKELEY COLLEGE, OVER
THE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE TIMES I HAD TO TALK TO HIM, LARRY WAS ALWAYS PLANNING. IF HE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING WITH HIM YOU
ALWAYS HAD A SENSE HE HAD A PLAN FOR THE NEXT YEAR OUT. HE KNEW EXACTLY ON WHAT DAY, WHERE HE WAS
GOING TO BE AND WHAT HE WAS GOING TO BE DOING. THAT’S THE KIND OF PERSON THAT HE WAS. HE TALKED ABOUT THE VISION THE DECISIONS. WHEN I FIRST CAME TO BERKELEY 23 YEARS AGO,
LARRY WAS TRANSITIONING OUT AT THAT POINT FROM AN ACTIVE DAY TO DAY ROLE, BUT HE WAS
STILL CHAIRMAN OF BOARD. AND THE VISIONS AND THE DECISIONS AND THE
THINGS THAT LARRY DID AT THAT POINT IN TIME ARE THINGS THAT CARRIED US THROUGH TODAY. YOU SEE THE FINGERPRINTS OF HIM ALL OVER BERKELEY
COLLEGE. WE TALKED ABOUT THE CLEAN DESK POLICY. I HAVE TO SAY THAT ONE OF THE ADMITTED FAILURES
THAT LARRY HAD IN HIS LIFE IS THAT HE WOULD COME INTO MY OFFICE
HE LOOK AT MY DESK AND THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE EVER SEEN MY DESK KNOW IT’S NOT IN COMPLIANCE
WITH THE CLEAN DESK POLICY. HE BASICALLY SAID TO ME, “MICHAEL, I’VE GIVEN
UP ON YOU.” HE WOULDN’T TRY ANYMORE. I CAN’T HELP MYSELF ANY TIME WHEN I WALK THROUGH
THE CAMPUS, AND I SEE SOMETHING SCOTCH TAPED TO THE WALL, AND THE FIRST THING I’M SAYING
IS, “LARRY IS NOT GOING TO LIKE THAT.” THAT’S THE KIND OF THING HE PUT THROUGH. HE WAS A VISIONARY IN THE CONCEPT OF HOW THE
SCHOOL SHOULD BE RUN AND WHAT THE FUTURE SHOULD BE. HE WAS A VISIONARY IN HOW THINGS LOOK. IT WAS SO UNIQUE. TOMMY IS HERE. OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST 20 PLUS YEARS,
TOMMY ALESSANDRELLO AND I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH LARRY ON A NUMBER OF REAL ESTATE
PROJECTS OVER THE LAST 20 PLUS YEARS. WE YOU KNOW, LARRY WAS GOOD ABOUT SURROUNDING
HIMSELF WITH VERY GOOD PEOPLE AND HE ALWAYS HAD GOOD ARCHITECTS AND GOOD BUILDERS WORKING
WITH HIM. TOMMY A. AND I WOULD SAY ALWAYS SAY TO EACH
OTHER THAT LARRY WE WOULD CALL HIM OUR ARCHITECT IN FLORIDA. HE HAD A BETTER VISION. HE COULD CORRECT ANY ARCHITECTURAL PLAN THAT
EVER CAME IN FRONT OF YOU. HE HAD THAT VISION. HE SAW THINGS. EVEN ON A TWO DIMENSION, HE ADDED THE THIRD
DIMENSION TO IT. HE WAS THE BEST ARCHITECT THAT WE EVER WORKED
WITH. HE HAD THAT KIND OF VISION AND HOW INTERESTING
IS THAT? HE HAD THAT HIS ABILITY TO SEE BEYOND WHAT
WE COULDN’T SEE. SO OFTEN LARRY WOULD ASK US TO DO SOMETHING
AND THE INITIAL REACTION, YOU WOULD SAY TO YOURSELF YOU WOULD SAY, THAT’S GOING TO BE
IMPOSSIBLE. HE WOULD INSIST UPON YOU DOING IT. AS IT TURNED OUT, IT WASN’T IMPOSSIBLE. HE KNEW IT COULD BE DONE. IN THE ROLE THAT I HAD BEFORE THIS ONE, I
HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEAL A LOT WITH LARRY ON A PERSONAL BASIS FOR THINGS THAT HE NEEDED
IN THE COURSE OF HIS LIFE. AND HE WOULD TALK TO ME AND THERE WOULD BE
OCCASIONS WHERE BERKELEY ASSOCIATES WOULD HAVE A NEED, AND THEY WOULD HAVE SOME TROUBLE
OR SOME PERSONAL ISSUES THEY WOULD NEED TO DEAL WITH. LARRY SAID TO ME ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS,
HE SAID, “MICHAEL, TAKE CARE OF THIS. I DON’T CARE WHAT IT COSTS AND DON’T TELL
ANYBODY ABOUT IT.” AND THAT’S WHAT HE DID. HE WASN’T IN IT FOR THE GLORY. HE DIDN’T SAY LOOK AT ME. HE DIDN’T WANT THE HONOR. HE DIDN’T WANT YOU TO SAY, “OH, WHAT A GREAT
GUY HE WAS.” HE JUST WANTED SOMETHING DONE FOR SOMEBODY
HE CARED ABOUT AND HE DID. WHAT AN AMAZING TRIBUTE TO SOMEONE TO SAY
SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR LIFE THAT IT WASN’T ABOUT HIM. IT WAS ABOUT SOMEBODY ELSE. IT WAS ABOUT THE BERKELEY FAMILY HE HAD SURROUNDING
AROUND HIM. IN ORDER TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST AND DIRECT
WITH ALL OF YOU LIKE LARRY WAS HONEST AND DIRECTED WITH ALL OF US, I HAVE TO TELL YOU
ANOTHER SIDE OF LARRY. OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEARS, NOT UNIQUE TO
ME, BUT I KNOW A NUMBER OF YOU WOULD HAVE BATTLES WITH LARRY OVER THE YEARS AND ARGUMENTS. AND HE LOVED A GOOD ARGUMENT. HE DIDN’T LIKE NECESSARILY TO YES PEOPLE. HE LIKED TO BE CHALLENGED, AND HE LIKED TO
HAVE PEOPLE SORT OF COME AT HIM, AND HE COULD COME AT IT STRONGLY AND GOOD PEOPLE AROUND
HIM, WOULD COULD COME AT THEM AT STRONGLY, TOO.
AND I SEE KAREN CARPENTIERI IS HERE, AND I KNOW THE STATUTE OF LIMITATION HAS PASSED,
BUT I HAVE TO COME CLEAN AND SAY THAT THERE WERE A COUPLE TIMES WHERE I SAID THAT I WAS
GOING TO STRANGLE HIM. I SAID IT STRAIGHT TO HIS FACE SO HE UNDERSTOOD
EXACTLY WHAT I MEANT, AND HE SAID HE WOULD STRANGLE ME, TOO, SO I GUESS IT SORT OF BALANCED
OUT. YOU COULD HAVE THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH LARRY
WHERE YOU COULD GET WORKED UP AND BE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU BELIEVE AND EACH SIDE FIGHTING
STRONGLY FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVED IN AND THEN MOVING ON AND DOING WHAT YOU NEED TO MOVE
FORWARD. HE WAS A JOY TO BE WITH. I WHEN I FIRST CAME ON BOARD SEEING THE INTERACTION
OF LARRY, JUST WATCHING, FOR EXAMPLE, HOW LARRY, MARIA PACE AND SUE RANZMAN WORKED TOGETHER. I DON’T THINK I EVER SAW IN THE COURSE OF
MY PERSONAL LIFE A TRIANGLE THAT FIT SO WELL TOGETHER, AND THE COMPLEMENT OF ONE TO THE
OTHER WAS JUST EXTRAORDINARY. AND THE THINGS THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO DO AND
THE THINGS THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO ACHIEVE WAS BETTER THAN ANY MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT
COULD DO, BETTER THAN ANY MANAGEMENT BOOK I COULD EVER READ. THE THREE OF THEM FIT TOGETHER SO PERFECTLY
AND THEY DID WONDERFUL THINGS FOR BERKELEY THAT STILL CONTINUE ON TO THIS DAY. THE LONGEST DAY I SPENT WITH LARRY WAS ON
SEPTEMBER 10, 2001. WE WERE DOING A CLOSING FOR A REAL ESTATE
PROPERTY IN NEW YORK CITY. IT WAS THE DAY BEFORE SEPTEMBER 11TH. IF YOU REMEMBER THAT DAY, IT WAS A GLOOMY,
RAINY DAY. WE WERE LOCKED IN A LAWYER’S OFFICE WITH TONS
OF LAWYERS AROUND. I WAS THERE WITH LARRY AND TALKING FOR ABOUT
EIGHT HOURS AND TELLING STORIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY. IT WAS A SPECIAL IT WAS SUCH A HORRIFIC DAY
THE NEXT DAY, BUT ONE OF MY FONDEST MEMORIES OF LARRY IS BEING ABLE TO SPEND THAT AMOUNT
OF CONCENTRATED TIME WITH HIM IN THAT SCENARIO TALKING ABOUT LIFE AND ABOUT BERKELEY AND
ABOUT HIM. HE IS SOMEONE THAT I WOULD REACH OUT TO QUITE
OFTEN AND TALK TO. AND YOU ALWAYS IN TIMES AND CHALLENGES WE
HAD OVER THE 20 YEARS, AND CERTAINLY THE ONES WE HAVE NOW, HE IS ALWAYS THE ONE YOU WOULD
FEEL COMFORTABLE HAVING AROUND. HE COULD SEE SOMETHING THAT APPEARS COMPLEX
TO YOU, AND HE COULD DECONSTRUCT IT AND COME UP WITH A SIMPLE ANSWER AS TO THE APPROACH
YOU DO IT HE WOULD THE OTHER THING ABOUT BEING A GREAT DECISION MAKER, HE WOULD NOT OVERANALYZE
THINGS. HE DIDN’T NEED REAMS AND REAMS OF SUPPORT
AND STATISTICS TO DO THINGS. HE HAD A GUT FEEL. HE COULD SEE DATA POINTS AND ISSUES AND COME
TO A DECISION THAT WAS VERY, VERY GOOD. MANY OF US WHO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK
WITH LARRY, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS IMPORTANT TO US, CERTAINLY PERSONAL TO ME, IS THAT YOU
WANTED TO GAIN HIS APPROVAL. YOU WANTED HIM TO LIKE WHAT YOU WERE DOING. AND HE WAS GOOD TO THE EXTENT LIKE WHEN YOU
DID SOMETHING, HE ACKNOWLEDGED YOU. ONE OF THE KEY THINGS FOR ME I’VE BEEN HERE
AT BERKELEY FOR A WHILE, BUT ONE OF THE GREATEST ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I’VE EVER RECEIVED, AND IN
MY HEART THE GREATEST ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF WORK I’VE DONE AT BERKELEY COLLEGE, IN THAT 75TH
ANNIVERSARY BOOK THAT LINDA AND LARRY WROTE, THERE WAS A SENTENCE, ONE SENTENCE THERE,
ACKNOWLEDGING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF TOM ALESSANDRELLO AND ANNETTE LONG AND MYSELF IN ONE SENTENCE. THAT WAS 13 YEARS AGO OR SO. THAT STILL IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST MEANINGFUL
THINGS THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME AT BERKELEY COLLEGE. THAT IS HOW MUCH GAINING HIS RESPECT AND PLEASURE
REALLY MEANT TO ME. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT VISION AND TALK ABOUT HAVING
LARRY AROUND, I THINK THIS IS A PERFECT SETTING FOR HIM RIGHT HERE. BECAUSE HE’S GOT A GREAT VISION OF ALL OF
US. HE IS WATCHING OVER ALL OF US AND WHAT WE’RE
DOING ON A DAILY BASIS. HE KNEW EVERYTHING. HE SAW EVERYTHING, AND HE WAS JUST REALLY
A SUPER, SUPER PERSON. FOR THOSE WHO NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
WORK WITH HIM, YOU REALLY MISSED OUT ON A GREAT TREASURE. BUT IN THE CONVERSATIONS I WOULD HAVE WITH
LARRY OVER THE YEARS, AND I’D BE SEEKING HIS ADVICE AND TALKING TO HIM ON THE PHONE AND
TRYING TO ENCOURAGE HIM TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO CERTAIN THINGS, HE ALWAYS WAS VERY,
VERY RESPECTFUL OF HIS SONS. WHEN HE LEFT BERKELEY COLLEGE, HE SAID, “THIS
IS THE BOYS TO RUN AT THIS POINT.” AND HE WAS ROCK SOLID IN THAT. HE MAY NOT HAVE NECESSARILY AGREED WITH EVERYTHING
THAT THEY DID, BUT HE WAS SO RESPECTFUL. NOT ONLY WAS HE SO RESPECTFUL OF ALL OF THEM
BUT HE WAS SO PROUD OF ALL OF THEM. HE WOULD TELL ME HOW MUCH HE THOUGHT OF THE
THINGS THAT THEY HAD DONE AND THE THINGS THEY ACHIEVED. REALLY, REALLY LOVED HIS BOYS A LOT. IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE AND HONOR FOR ME TO
INTRODUCE KEVIN’S OLDEST SON AND THE CHAIRMAN AT BERKELEY COLLEGE, KEVIN LUING. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>KEVIN LUING: I WAS HOPING MICHAEL WOULD TALK A FEW MORE MINUTES TO GET THE BLUE SKY
OVER ABOVE BUT STILL A LITTLE WINDY. LOOKING BACK OVER HISTORY, WHO DO WE MOST
ASSOCIATE WITH BERKELEY COLLEGE? YOU MAY THINK BACK TO 1931 WHEN WE WERE FOUNDED
BY ALYEA BRICK IN EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY. HE RAN BERKELEY SCHOOL AT THAT POINT UNTIL
HIS DEATH IN 1959. THAT WAS A TOTAL OF 29 YEARS. HIS WIDOW, MARJORIE BRICK, THEN TOOK OVER
AND RAN THE SCHOOLS UNTIL MY FATHER AND HIS PARTNERS CAME IN 1965. SO SHE WAS INVOLVED WITH THE BERKELEY SCHOOL
FOR 35 YEARS. OR DO YOU THINK OF LARRY LUING FROM 1965 UNTIL
HIS RETIREMENT IN 2001, 37 YEARS? I CAN’T THINK OF ANYBODY ELSE THAT WE ASSOCIATE
MORE WITH BERKELEY COLLEGE THAN MY FATHER. HAVE YOU MADE ACTUALLY MY FATHER, LARRY LUING,
WAS SIR BERKELEY BEFORE OUR MASCOT SIR BERKELEY. AND HAVE YOU MADE THE CONNECTION THAT LARRY
LUING PASSED AWAY IN 2016, THE SAME YEAR THAT SIR BERKELEY WAS BORN? THE BERKELEY SCHOOL WAS MOVED TO WEST PATERSON,
NOW WOODLAND PARK, IN 1976. MY FATHER SERVED AS PRESIDENT HERE UNTIL 1982
WHEN HE BECAME CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND JACK JONES BECAME PRESIDENT. I FOLLOWED JACK INTO THAT SAME OFFICE AS PRESIDENT
IN 1991 AND EVENTUALLY MY FATHER’S OFFICE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AFTER MY FATHER RETIRED
IN 2001 AFTER 20 YEARS IN THAT POSITION. I CONTINUE TO FOLLOW MY FATHER’S EXAMPLES
OF AN OPEN DOOR AND A CLEAN DESK. I WALK THE CAMPUSES HE DID MEETING WITH FACULTY
AND STAFF, ALONG WAY PICKING UP ANY TRASH ON THE GROUND AND MAKING SURE THAT THE FACILITIES
WERE ALWAYS CLEAN AND FUNCTIONAL. AND, OF COURSE, ALWAYS MAKING SURE THAT THE
STUDENT CAME FIRST WHEN MAKING DECISIONS. I’D NOW LIKE TO TURN MY ATTENTION TO THE STATUE. GILLIE AND MARC SHATTNER WERE THE ARTISTS
THAT DESIGNED AND CREATED THIS STATUE IN THEIR STUDIO IN SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA. THE STATUTE WAS DESIGNED FROM A PHOTO AROUND
1990. WE THANK THOSE OF YOU WHO SUBMITTED PHOTOS
TO HELP WITH US THE STATUE AS IT WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND APPROPRIATE PHOTOS FROM THAT TIME
PERIOD. I’D ALSO LIKE TO THANK THE STATUE DEDICATION
COMMITTEE, LINDA PINSKY, SUSAN FREY, TOM ALESSANDRELLO, ANGELA HARRINGTON, ANTHONY ALISON, ANTHONY
AMIANO AND TERI DUDA. KUDOS ALSO TO ALFONSO TORINO, OUR INTERIOR
DESIGN CHAIR FOR HIS DESIGN WHICH WE ADOPTED. THANK YOU TOM ALESSANDRELLO, BRIAN CRONIN
AND THE WOODLAND PARK BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS TEAM FOR GETTING THIS WHOLE AREA TRANSFORMED
FOR TODAY. THINK ABOUT YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. WAS THERE A STATUE ON CAMPUS? DARTMOUTH COLLEGE HAS A WARREN BENTLEY BUST
IN THE HOPKINS CENTER WHERE STUDENTS WOULD RUB HIS NOSE FOR GOOD LUCK. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY HAS A STATUE OF JAMES
MADISON WHICH STUDENTS LOVE TO COVER WITH HATS, SCARVES AND OTHER ARTICLES OF CLOTHING. AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN, GRADUATING
STUDENTS GET THEIR SENIOR PHOTOS TAKEN IN THE LAP OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN. THE INTENTION WAS TO MAKE THE LARRY LUING
STATUE INVITING, AND I THINK THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED. WE WELCOME INTERACTION WITH THE STATUE BY
ALL. IT LENDS ITSELF WELL TO SELFIES. WHAT NEW BERKELEY TRADITIONS WILL BE CREATED
WITH THIS STATUE? REGARDLESS OF THESE NEW TRADITIONS, THIS STATUE
WILL BE A REMINDER OF LARRY LUING AND BERKELEY COLLEGE’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE WHERE THE
STUDENT ALWAYS COMES FIRST. AT THIS TIME I’D ASK THAT RANDY, TIM AND BRIAN
TO PLEASE COME FORWARD TO HELP ME WITH THE UNVEILING OF THE STATUE. IF EVERYBODY ELSE COULD THEN REMAIN SEATED
FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE PROGRAM THAT WILL BE CONTINUING AFTER THE UNVEILING. [ APPLAUSE ]
[LARRY L. LUING STATUE UNVEILING]>>LINDA PINSKY MAURO: AND NOW I WOULD LIKE
TO ASK MAYOR KEITH KAZMARK TO THE PODIUM. YOU DON’T NEED THIS.>>THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>MAYOR KAZMARK: GOOD AFTERNOON. IF I COULD ASK KEVIN, RANDY, TIM AND BRIAN
TO COME BACK UP TO THE PODIUM WITH ME. BEFORE I READ THE PROCLAMATION THAT WE’VE
PREPARED, I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT IT’S ALWAYS EXCITING TO COME HERE TO BERKELEY COLLEGE
AND BE PART OF THESE CELEBRATIONS. AND TODAY IT’S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND
THE LEGACY AND THE LIFE THAT LARRY L. LUING LIVED. AND THE LEGACY THAT THESE MEN TO MY LEFT HAVE
FOLLOWED IN CREATING SUCH A DYNAMIC EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION AS WE HAVE HERE AT BERKELEY COLLEGE. THE VISION WAS LAID BY MR. LUING. JUST LOOK AROUND AT THE CAMPUS. LOOK AT THE TRANSITION THAT THAT HAS UNDERGONE
THIS CAMPUS HERE IN WOODLAND PARK AND THROUGHOUT THE OTHER CAMPUSES IN THE BERKELEY FAMILY. IT’S A TRADITION THAT WE’RE PROUD TO SHARE
WITH THE BERKELEY FAMILY HERE IN WOODLAND PARK. AND WITH THAT, I’D LIKE TO READ THIS PROCLAMATION
DECLARING TODAY LARRY L. LUING DAY HERE IN THE BOROUGH OF WOODLAND PARK. [ APPLAUSE ]

AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT EXTEND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, AND WHEREAS UNDER LARRY L.
LUING’S DIRECTION BERKELEY COLLEGE EVOLVED INTO A CAREER FOCUSED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

WHEREAS THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE BOROUGH OF WOODLAND PARK RECOGNIZE THAT LARRY L. LUING

VICE PRESIDENT OF THE BERKELEY SCHOOL IN 1965, ASCENDED TO THE LEVEL OF PRESIDENT IN 1969
AND LATER TO CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD IN 1982, AND WHEREAS LARRY L. LUING IMPLEMENTED PRACTICES
AND PROCEDURES THAT PUT STUDENTS FIRST AND HAVE HELPED THEM SUCCEED THROUGH TEACHING
AND LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT EXTEND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM, AND WHEREAS UNDER LARRY L.
LUING’S DIRECTION BERKELEY COLLEGE EVOLVED INTO A CAREER FOCUSED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
OFFERING MASTER’S, BACHELOR’S AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS TO OVER 7,000 STUDENTS ON
SEVEN CAMPUSES, AND WHEREAS THE PASSING OF LARRY L. LUING IN 2016 AT THE AGE OF 86 WAS
A PROFOUND LOSS FOR THE BERKELEY COLLEGE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE MISSED HIS VISION AND LEADERSHIP,
AND WHEREAS A STATUE OF LARRY L. LUING BEARING HIS MOTTO “ALL STUDENTS COME FIRST” WAS COMMISSIONED
TO HONOR HIS ACHIEVEMENT AND MEMORY AND ERECTED IN A PROMINENT LOCATION HERE ON THE WOODLAND

TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE

NOW, PLEASE RISE FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THE COLORS AND PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE LED BY GABRIELLE
PERALTA, STUDENT VETERAN.>>GABRIELLE PERALTA: I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE
TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE
WHEREAS THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL OF THE BOROUGH OF WOODLAND PARK RECOGNIZE THAT LARRY L. LUING
LED BERKELEY COLLEGE THROUGH A 35 YEAR PERIOD OF GROWTH FROM A SECRETARIAL SCHOOL TO AN
ACCREDITED INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING, AND WHEREAS LARRY L. LUING, A KOREAN WAR ARMY
VETERAN, WHO LEFT A SUCCESSFUL CAREER AT MCGRAW HILL BOOK COMPANY TO BECOME A PART OWNER AND
VICE PRESIDENT OF THE BERKELEY SCHOOL IN 1965, ASCENDED TO THE LEVEL OF PRESIDENT IN 1969
AND LATER TO CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD IN 1982, AND WHEREAS LARRY L.
PARK CAMPUS OF BERKELEY COLLEGE, NOW THEREFORE, I, MAYOR KEITH KAZMARK, ON BEHALF OF THE BOROUGH
COUNCIL DO HEREBY PROCLAIM AT THE DEDICATION OF THE STATUE THAT THE GREATER WOODLAND PARK
COMMUNITY RECOGNIZE THE 14TH OF JUNE, 2019, FOR HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO EDUCATION
AND THE SUCCESS OF BERKELEY COLLEGE, I HEREBY DECLARE TODAY LARRY L. LUING DAY IN THE BOROUGH
OF WOODLAND PARK. CONGRATULATIONS, GENTLEMEN.>>THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]
>>LINDA PINSKY MAURO: IN CLOSING, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING OUT
TODAY AND HERE WE BEGIN A NEW TRADITION. THANK YOU TO THE LUING FAMILY FOR THE LOVELY
LUNCH THAT EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO. [ APPLAUSE ]
